RESOLVED -Stuck at starting GDM

Postby bob@debian » 2020-01-20 11:23

I did a net install of Debian 10.2 and when rebooting, it stops as soon as I see "starting GDM manager"
I attempted several installs, I did want to use the Cinnamon DE.
I attempted installing from a live USB also.

I was able to install Manjaro Arch without issue.
I was able to install Linux Mint without issue.

Can anyone provide guidance or point me to a source of info?

Thank you.

We need to know your hardware. If it was introduced after January 2018 then it probably won't be well supported under a stock Debian buster system. That's how Debian stable works.

Thank you, I am away from that device right now, but I will post it later. The computer is an older HP Desktop, probably about 2012 model.
I will get that info and post later.

I was wondering if there is a way I can install lightdm while installing, but did not find anything searching the WEB.

Thanks again.

You don't want LightDM, it runs X as root (unlike GDM).

To get to a console press "e" with the Debian boot menu entry highlighted then add this to the end of the line that starts with "linux" and press <ctrl>+x (at the same time) start the modified entry:
Code: Select all
systemd.unit=multi-user.target

Then see if plain startx works from a console login, that will eliminate problems with the display manager.

But read this first: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=142974

So have you installed the non-free firmware that is required by your card? And do you appreciate how irritating it is for me to have to type the same question over and over again?

Hi,

No disrespect, but I am not aware that my response would be irritating and in no way is that my intention. I have spent hours researching and doing prior to posting. I do find that the overload of data is confusing, that is why I posted here.

I am about to try the steps you outlined above now. My previous post was informational with no intent of being annoying.
I do apologize for that unintentional action.

Thank you.

Don't worry about it, I'm just blowing off steam. My linked [FAQ] shows what you have to do.

Followed the directions you outlined and now I have my GUI.
Thanks for the information. It was and continues to be a great learning experience.
