Best resources and tutorials for configuring an email server

Postby danran » 2020-03-03 09:33

I am running a LEMP server on a raspberry pi, and attempting to configure an email server possibly using tools such as postfix and dovecot. There seem to be many outdated tutorials that are no longer relevant around the internet, but nothing up to date. I am wondering if anyone has any good suggestions as to how to get started configuring an email server on a Debian based LEMP server. I am currently running the latest Raspbian and just looking for a good place to start. Any suggestions, links, or advice would be highly appreciated!

Thanks!

I have tried the raspberry forums as well, and it just seemed more legit to go strait to the Debian forums since Raspbian is so heavily based on Debian. Also, email servers aren't at top strictly designated to raspberry pi, and they apply to all debian Distros, which is another reason I felt going to strait to the source and utilizing the debian forums might be the best idea. However, I do appreciate your suggestion regardless. I haven't gotten many answers on the raspberry pi forums either. Maybe someone will throw some good info my way eventually. Thanks for your time and effort in helping me!

The thing is that just mentioning "postfix and dovecot" still leaves you with a lot of options that no "how to" is going to cover. There are many "postfix + dovecot + mysql + spamassassin" tutorials, such as https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... amassassin, which is actually quite good.

But then you may prefer plain text files for the users, instead of a database, or rspamd instead of spamassassin.
(see also https://gist.github.com/ibqn/22b9c1726d ... 60fb758d15)

You may then need to install redis for rspamd (e.g. for storing the bayes/neural parameters, etc.).

Then sooner or later you will realize that you can't just use your upstream resolver but will need your own, locally installed, recursive resolver. Unbound is a very common (and very good) choice.

Maybe you don't even need the whole complexity, but just postfix relaying all outgoing e-mails to a smarthost.

As for dovecot (assuming you want dovecot), we don't know if you need it standalone or e.g. with replication.

I'd suggest you either start with $random tutorial/howto and ask if something doesn't fit with what you want. Or you tell us exactly what you need, and hope somebody can help you :)

Good luck!

PS: and please, whatever you do, make sure you double and tripe check postfix configuration before you open 25/465/587 to the world. The world doesn't need a new spam/malware source!
