No GUI after upgrading Jessie to Stretch

Postby Reika68 » 2020-09-25 14:02

Hello,
I've searched the forum for an issue like mine, but, perhaps due to
something wrong i did, I haven't found nothing yet, so I am writing a new post,
hoping someone can help me...
I've upgraded my Jessie Debian to Stretch: everything went well, but
after rebooting the machine, after inserting user/password, desktop
is black and no icons are present. Just the mouse icon, nothing else.
I tried creating a new user, via Putty: when logged in, desktop and icons
are visible. The problem seems related to existing users, created when
Linux was still Jessie, including root... What is wrong?
Thank you very much.
Sorry for my bad English.
Regards.

How did you do this upgrade?

Post your /etc/apt/sources.list and sources.list.d. It will help if we can see what's in them.

Also, which desktop are you trying to start? Debian's default GUI is GNOME.

Hello, thank you very much for you replies.
Confirmed: Gnome was the GUI I was using in Jessie.
Here is the content of sources.list:
__________________________________________________________________
deb file:///media/cdrom0 stretch main contrib
# deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates contrib main
# deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates contrib main
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.7.1 _Jessie_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 20170116-10:09]/ jessie main contrib
___________________________________________________________________
I upgraded via image.
___________________________________________________________________
/etc/apt/sources.list.d is a directory, it contains:
php7.3.list
php.list
___________________________________________________________________
Thank you very veru much!!!!

Do you consider your computer to be on-line or off-line?

If the Stretch CD is your only Repository source, how does it include contrib?

Your sources list seems to suggest that your computer should be off-line.

Change your /etc/apt/sources.list to
Code: Select all
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free

(There's another line many users use but for now let's get you running.

Disable the entries in /etc/apt/sources.list.d.

As root do
Code: Select all
apt-get update
followed by
Code: Select all
apt-get upgrade
.

Reboot and test. Then, as root, do
Code: Select all
apt-get dist-upgrade
.

Again, reboot and test. If you still have no GUI check to see if you have Xorg. You may have to reinstall it.

Hello, thank you very much for your reply.
I tried everything, unfortunatly the problem still remains.
I am wrong in doing something, perhaps.
How do I reinstall Xorg?

While "Googling" the forum I found these commands:

apt-get install --reinstall xorg

Or, instead:

aptitude purge Xorg
aptitude install Xorg
aptitude purge xserver-xorg
aptitude install xserver-xorg
aptitude purge gnome-core
aptitude install gnome-core
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Are they ok in your opinion?

Thank you very very much!!!
