Lightdm Alternatives

Postby cj5 » 2020-12-09 00:25

I'm new to Debian and lightdm. I am trying to create a custom Debian ISO and am in a live environment customizing. When I try to install lightdm and test by logging out it still shows sddm. When I run 'systemctl status lightdm' it says its failed. I've done research and tried a lot of different options but I cant seem to get lightdm to start. If anybody else could lend some help would be appreciated. I'm thinking about just trying to switch to a different manager for my login because this is not working. So if anybody also could name some good DM for my login that be cool.

Code: Select all
# dpkg-reconfigure sddm

If that doesn't work then change the display manager manually:
Code: Select all
# ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/sddm.service /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service

I would recommend GDM instead though, that runs X under the normal user (LightDM runs X under root, which is bad).

Of course the best display manager is no display manager at all: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=123694
