Hi,
I'm trying to put Debian on a latitude 5400 (debian-10.9.0-i386). I've downloaded an ISO image and used Rufus 3.13 (latest) to write it to a USB3 flash drive on Win7 x64. I can boot a Thinkpad X230 from the Debian flash drive created - so the media is bootable.
I cannot get the 5400 to give me the option to boot from the flash drive after F12 on boot (doesn't see the drive) - although it can see a PartedMagic (2021_02_28) bootable image on a flash drive, and boot from that.
In the BIOS; I've disabled secure boot, and enabled USB boot support.
The new 5400s don't seem to have a 'Legacy BIOS' option. It's UEFI only. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
In Rufus I had to use DD image mode to write the USB flash drive. ISO mode didn't work. It kept complaining about SysLinus files and couldn't download them. I manually added the SysLinux files to the Rufus directory (syslinux-6.04\20190226) but it failed when writing the image.
Dell have not been any help.
Can anyone suggest where the problem might lie?
Thanks.

Re: Debian USB Install on Latitude 5400 failing
The Dell Latitude 5400 is a 64 bit machine, Why install 32 bit software?

Important Note
* Requires the non-free package iwlwifi for wifi/bluetooth
* System Configuration: In BIOS, change SATA Operation from "RAID On" to "AHCI". Without this change, Linux won't find the internal hard disk.

I wasn't aware that I was installing 32 bit software. Do you know what the 64 bit software is called? I downloaded i386 assuming it to mean intel, and this laptop has an intel processor.
>>In BIOS, change SATA Operation from "RAID On" to "AHCI".
I've done this. The laptop still doesn't see the Debian USB flash drive at boot.

What is the graphics hardware? Debian buster doesn't support 10th or 11th generation Intel integrated graphics.
Have you tried the Debian bullseye alpha3 installer?
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... 64/iso-cd/

integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics core

I've just downloaded and tried firmware-edu-bullseye-DI-alpha3-amd64-netinst.iso. This did boot from the USB drive but the installation asks for additional files - please see the picture below. Do you know where I'd find these files?

Re: Debian USB Install on Latitude 5400 failing
HOAS pointed you to an ISO which should have the file you need.
Do the install, ignoring the call for extra files.
Reboot.
Put in the USB stick again.
Do
Take out the USB stick.
Reboot.
It should now be working.
