I used the following guide :-
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian ... tion_Guide
That was a while ago and the partition has since been wiped. Worked fine though...

Re: How to have 3D on ATI Radeon Xpress 200
There's the rub. Some users like the proprietary drivers. I use the open source drivers. Just install the various mesa drivers. Do a search on this site; there's a ton of info on it.

Re: How to have 3D on ATI Radeon Xpress 200
I have this card on my laptop.
The open source driver xserver-xorg-video-radeon for this card is old in lenny and does not support 3d acceleration well.
If you want to use the open source driver at all costs, you have upgrade to Squeeze or Sid. Their version is almost the newest available and It works well (except for some trouble people are having with suspend and hibernate: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/305301 )
If you want to stay in Lenny until Squeeze is ready you'll have to use AMD's proprietary driver or the fglrx module. Unfortunately the version of the driver in Lenny will not work with kernels > 2.6.27 (I haven't actually tried 2.6.28...). It works very well with the mainline kernel in Lenny and very well with my customized vanilla 2.6.27 kernel. If you are using any of these two kernels, then follow method 1 here: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian ... tion_Guide
That should do it.
The 2.6.27 kernel is actually pretty awesome. Perfect for Lenny as the matter of fact. Because it's a Long term support kernel release and most of its bugs have been dealt with upstream (actually they have released 39 patches since it first came out). It has improved my system a lot (especially b43 for my broadcom 4318 wireless chip).
There are a couple of pretty good howtos for kernel compiling in the forums. Good luck

This didn't work for me...when I got to the final step (aticonfig --initial) it said "no supported adapters found" I am using sid with 2.6.31acimmarusti wrote:http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian ... tion_Guide

Re: How to have 3D on ATI Radeon Xpress 200
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that ATI/AMD dropped support for this chipset/card after version 9-3 of their driver. Thus in Sid or Squeeze you have no choice but to use the open source radeon driver (unless you can convince the developers to package a modified version of 9-3 that will work with your kernel. I tried, they said it was not possible).
The new open source radeon driver should work fairly well...I used it when I was using Ubuntu and opensuse. I had no complaints except for the suspend/hibernation issues.
Apparently there is a way to patch the 9-3 fglrx driver to work with kernel 2.6.29: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... el-722858/
But all debian users reported no success...if you figure something out let me know!

Do you absolutely need kernel 2.6.31.6?...if you get 2.6.27.39 you can get ATI/AMD proprietary driver working really well for you...SonicX wrote:thanks
