Irssi is a terminal based IRC client for UNIX systems. It also supports SILC and ICB protocols via plugins.
Irssi - The client of the future -

One of the benefits of getting to know how irssi works is it works in a terminal, so even if you can't get a de/wm working you can go to ctrl+alt+f1 etc and ask for help in the Debian irc channel.

Using GNU Screen, Irssi, Bitlbee, and SSH together allows you to have a persistent connection to IRC servers,Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, and MSN Instant Messenger. Via SSH, you can access this persistent chat suite from anywhere.

Even with all the issues that kopete and pidgin has with msn and yahoo, during the times those apps were unable to connect, irssi + bitlbee worked just fine for me.

I know most beginners would rather use a GUI irc client like xchat or konversation, but once you take the time to learn to use irssi you will understand why the Debian gurus in #debian tell people to use it.
irssi has plenty of nifty scripts, and it can be themed.

There is a simple script that will set irssi up for you.

So jump right in, open a terminal and type irssi.

There are also many GUI irc clients like konversation, xchat, quassle, lostirc, pidgin, chatzilla/firefox, opera.
