i've install debian and my network connection doesen't work, but instead on windows xp works very good.

what type of network connection do you have?

by the way, i'm running an esential debian (only command line , witout graphical interfaces), installed from a small image file cd of 138 mb

you have only a minimal installation, you need complete your installation,
configure your conection and after execute:
# tasksel
and selec Graphical desktop environment, and if you use wireless selec laptop, they install more tools for configure your conection.
before,
for see that controller need,
$ lspci
if you no have this command then, you can download the "pciutils" package form debian package repository, copy in usb-stick and instal it.
# dpkg -i /.../..../pciutils, usually: # dpkg -i /dev/sda1/pciutils ...
