How to select right UPS for lenny?

#1 Post by qutorial »

Hello.
I am a newbie here, so I am sorry if something wrong.
I want to buy an UPS for my small debian SVN server, runing
Linux Debian 5.0.3 Debian, on old Pentium 4 1.8GHz machine with 512 MB Ram,
which has COM and USB ports.

Here is the list of available UPSes in a local shop: (In Russian, but readable)
http://solwin.ru/index.php?act=catalog&tar=99999922
What matters, is the easiness of configuration with my debian server.
I have oftenly turning off electrical power here.
So I want the ups to gently shutdown the server on power fail, and power it up again, when
power is resurected again.

Can you, please, help me, to configure it also, after selecting the right one UPS?

I know, that I will use NUT, and may be some more tools.
APC:

and Ippon:

UPSes are available for me to buy.

I am about to select the right model.
This is my only doubt now.
I have installed nut on my server already.

APC should be a good brand to choose for this.

A related question: I have never been able to find in stores the special purpose data cable which is apparently required to hook up an APC UPS to your computer so that your UPS monitoring demon can do a clean shutdown if the power shuts off. Any ideas?

The APC UPS's that I use come with a cable that is USB for the computer end and RJ-45 (ethernet) on the UPS end. I am sure that if I needed to replace one APC would be the only place I would find it.

I've got an APC smartUPS RS 800, and the supplied USB cable worked out of the box for me. The gnome power manager detected it, and shows the battery level. Right click gives options on what do when there's a power failure.

There's also the apcupsd package, which you might want to give a try.

Apparently they do not always supply the cable. I guess I need an adapter, but I can't find that in stores either. I cannot use apcupsd without the cable. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong!).
