Installing packages from the source

#1 Post by Inspirare »

Good day to everyone
I have a question about compiling and installing packages that are made from source code

I had read couple guides such as
http://www.northernjourney.com/opensour ... wb022.html
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/linux- ... linux.html
http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/softinstall.html
I've tried to begin with installing firefox, which I downloaded from official site. I've passed all those archive stuff, but when I try to execute
./configure , I get "no such command error" And there's all I can get from it

For instance I also get some desktop theme from kdelooks, also packed source code, and command "./configure" on it works just perfect
But still I can't get nothing from "make" or "make install"

So what I wanted to ask was: Is there some good newbie-guides about this subject ?

I don't know,maybe console log helps

Code: Select all

when you download source. There is usually a file called README or INSTALL. read them. they will have information related to whatever source you have downloaded.

if you tried to compile firefox (or thunderbird for that matter), there is no need. just run the executable.

Sure Iceweasel won't work as well as Firefox for you?

#3 Post by Ahtiga Saraz »

If your only interest is in installing Firefox, are you sure that Iceweasel won't work just fine for you? I admit that I was initially sceptical, but now I prefer Iceweasel to Firefox. In particular, I note that it is perfectly possible to install "essential add-ons" like latest NoScript and (almost!) latest AdBlock Plus to Iceweasel, the same way you do it in Firefox.

Back to installing packages from the source: have you read this HowTo?
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=38976
An important point when installing packages from source is that you want, if possible, to avoid breaking package management, which is one of the best things about Debian.

There is nothing to install for Firefox, download, extract, run firefox.

Or you can follow the steps here:
Switching from Debian Iceweasel to Firefox, permanently - http://techpatterns.com/forums/about143 ... ht=firefox

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
Raspberry PI 400 Distro: Raspberry Pi OS Base: Debian Sid Kernel: 5.15.69-v8+ aarch64 DE: MATE Ram 4GB
Debian - "If you can't apt install something, it isn't useful or doesn't exist"

The message that caused the crystal window decoration build to error out on the configuration indicates that you are missing header files for the xwindows graphical display, which you need to build programs that are using that part of it.The package is called libx11-dev. You will also need kdelibs4-dev for building something that's part of the KDE 3.X desktop.

Only when the configuration is successfully completed does the script create a makefile, so that's why the "make" command did nothing.
