CDs or DVDs

on getting debian for install, what's the main difference between the CD installation disk and the multi-DVDs?

The only differance between the main CD and the DVD is that the DVD will have more packages availible for you so you don't have to spend time downloading them during the install. This is exmtrealy handy if your box doesnt have an internet connection.

The main options are listed at http://www.debian.org/distrib/ - consider downloading a "small net install" CD (just 180 MB in size) and using that to download the rest according to what you want.

You more than likely only need the first CD or DVD not all of them.

Most of my machines don't have usable wireless until after some post-install tweaking, so I'll use the AMD64 CD-1 for the install and run

tasksel install desktop
to download any remaining packages (usually only 300-500 more that didn't fit on the first CD).

IME a netinstall + packages via the net uses much less than a CD install. BUt then I have a habit of doing things on the light side.
