Please update howto get persistence

Postby ngc7088 » 2010-04-05 02:21

Hello,

I am using this image of Debian:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/relea ... esktop.img
But it doesn't matter what I do I fail to make it persistent.
I have tried this:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/Howto/Custom_Install
But there is no "grub"on my "install" drive, apparently is an outdated notion.
I have tried this:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/debian-liv ... #more-2073
(with conflicting info regarding the previous link)
By booting with a knoppix USB with gparted. Doesn't matter if I leave the NTFS partition unnamed or call it home_rw, I get no persistence, even writing persistent while booting.
I have tried also changing this (while in knoppix) :
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/debian/live.cfg
Basically adding the word "persistent" after "live" but it does not work.

All changes I make disappear. What it the current way of getting persistence with this package?

I'm not sure what you mean by "persistence"... install the OS to some drive, perhaps? If so, that cannot (yet) be done from the Debian live-CD. You'll need to download some other image for that, preferably a netinst.iso if you have a wired connection to the internet during installation. Installing to a removable drive (like a USB key) is also possible, using the "unetbootin" method.

If you're trying to run a debian-live system from a usb flash drive with a persistent home partition, you need to use ext2 or other linux format instead of ntfs. Label it home-rw, and type "live persistent" at the boot prompt.

Why do you want to use ntfs? (Say a little more about what you're trying to do.)
