MIssing somthing to install VBOX Guest Additions

#1 Post by meanpt »

Hi,

Debian Iso 503-xfce+lxde-i386-CD-1 installed as guest under a Windows XP Pro host.

I know I must install something before installing VBOX Guest Additions.
Already Installed bin-utils and the linux-headers

Setting up linux-headers-2.6.26-2-common (2.6.26-21lenny4) ...
Setting up linux-headers-2.6.26-2-686 (2.6.26-21lenny4) ...
Setting up linux-headers-2.6.26-2-486 (2.6.26-21lenny4) ...
Setting up linux-headers-2.6-486 (2.6.26+17+lenny1) ...

The problem is, Guest Additions are still unable to install.

From the install log:
"/usr/share/VBoxGuestAdditions/test/build_in_tmp: line 95: make: command not found"

From the terminal:
"meanpt:/home/meanpt# sh VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 3.1.4 Guest Additions for Linux........
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version of VirtualBox Guest Additions...
Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules ...fail!
(Your system does not seem to be set up to build kernel modules.
Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong)
Installing the Window System drivers
Installing X.Org Server 1.4 modules ...done.
Setting up the Window System to use the Guest Additions ...done.
You may need to restart the hal service and the Window System (or just restart
the guest system) to enable the Guest Additions.

Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components ...done.
meanpt:/home/meanpt# "

But neither the graphics are working, this is, I can't set the screen definition to my screen dimentions.

I already grasped through 20 or so forun's posts and didn't get any clue on this.

Regards,

mean

apt-get install build-essential
That will give you the make-command. Then try it again.

I usually install debian in vbox, install kernel-headers and build-essential, install the guest-additions, reboot, log-in as root once, log out as root immediatly, log-into user and my resolution is ok.
As i don't use a login-manager (gdm, kdm, xdm or similar) i got no problems to login in as root. If you use a login-manager you need to allow it in its settings, and reset it once your resolution is set. Allowing login in as root is nonsense (because login in as root is nonsense).

:D Thanks, nadir. So far. so good :D I'll test the file sharing later on, and see if the mount -t works as it "normally" does ;).
Thanks, again :D
