Hey all
I recently installed Lenny and used the "Guided - Use Entire Disk" option.
I made separate partitions for root, /etc, /var, /home, /usr and swap.
I trusted that the auto partitioner would choose sensible sizes but possibly that was a bad move, root is only 340Mb and is full...
Is 340 really too small?
Can I free up space?
Resize partition? (offline editor)
Help much appreciated.
Cheers
Ash

Re: Root partition full already - resize?
Ok after some further reading it sound like the 340Mb should be sufficient, would you agree?
I ran du which seems to imply that Wine is the culprit.
How do I get it off root and onto a partition with more space. (I want as much as possible in my 230gb home area)
The modules directory is also "large", how do I get around this?

Re: Root partition full already - resize?
Personally, i would just delete /root/.wine.
I do have to ask however... Why did you run a program in wine as root? Just in case you didn't know or realize, wine is just as capable of running Windows viruses, malware and trogens as it is at running the windows programs themselves.

Re: Root partition full already - resize?
OK thanks.
I haven't run Wine at all that I know of, I have followed some guides to get Office 2007 working through it though.
Im pretty new to this so I have probably run it as root unwittingly, thanks for the heads up.

Re: Root partition full already - resize?
On hard disk that size and for a desktop system I would choose a simple / /home swap partition scheme and dedicate plenty of space for / 10GB should suffice. Some applications need plenty of space for /tmp and package management can use a lot of space if it's paid no attention. A few applications such as games and openoffice are very big indeed. I have a 12GB / on my desktop of which 6.2GB is used, mostly in /usr and /lib.

Re: Root partition full already - resize?
Hmm I wish I had done more research into best practices for partitions before installing instead of just following the guided setup, too late though.
*Can* the root partition be expanded by accessing the drive offline and in another PC or will Debian fall in a heap when I try to boot up?
I thought maybe I could shrink sda2 and use the free space to expand sda1.

Yes you can do this from a live CD. Try http://partedmagic.com/ which is a live CD with all kinds of utilities, the main one being gparted.

Re: Root partition full already - resize?
In case it isn't already obvious to you, you should purge that wine stuff from the root folder.
