Disabled realtek USB wifi adapter

Postby Frzs » 2018-01-01 17:39

Hi,
The built in wifi adapter is slow, so I bought an USB adapter.
I can't figure out how to make my wireless USB adapter to work:

Earlier firmware failed to load, so I installed realtek firmware. Now the firmware loads, but the device is disabled.

If I enable it with up, and run again lshw -C network, it gets enabled. But the device does not start to blink with blue light as it in Windows. If I unplug and replug, it gets disabled again.
I tried to connect to a network in Wicd after changing the wireless connection's logical name from the default built in wifi card to the USB, did not work.

Thanks in advance.

For Jessie some realtek wireless firmware is not included in the debian package. For those devices it needs to be manually installed.
This is usually a licensing issue so it may also hold for Stretch.

As far as slow wireless, sometimes it is due to frequency congestion or poor signal strength. Try scanning your area with the older card to see if some one nearby is using the same channel. Also look at the Signal/Noise ratio.

iwconfig(8) will scan from the command line.

Thanks for the reply.

If someone wants to know how I installed the driver for rtl8192eu:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Reboot (to boot the latest installed kernel) and Install the required package:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install git build-essential

Install the wifi driver:
Code: Select all
git clone https://github.com/jeremyb31/rtl8192eu-linux-driver.git
cd rtl8192eu-linux-driver
make
sudo make install

Reboot
Code: Select all
sudo ifconfig enx000f00391e1c up
sudo ifconfig wlp1s0 down

It works much better:
Old speed test (Mbit/s): 13 and 17
New speed test (Mbit/s): 73 77

Code: Select all
sudo iwconfig

Unless you set it up with DKMS so it rebuilds the module whenever the kernel is updated.
I have a similar device and use the driver from here which has simple instructions how to set up with DKMS -
