Are you trying to print a pdf? If so test with the test page in the Cups Web interface
http://blogs.adobe.com/jlockman/2016/09/06/new-life-for-old-postscript-printers-using-cups/xerox_3535_hold_queue_-_cups_2_1_0/
or
print a postscript file (*.ps). There are examples in /usr/share/ghostscripts/9.26/examples.
Ghostscript has pdf clean up filters and a filter to convert pdf2ps. These produce huge postscript files compared to poppler pdftops.
If that is the case, you can bypass pdf filtering by printing a postscript document. If your needs are to print large pdf's, you may want to pre-process with pdftops.

I am having trouble understanding this last post, as this error happens with any file, including the cups test page.
Link posted does get me to any test page, juut some comments in a blog.
Folder 9.26 has several subfolders none of hem called "examples".
I am at my wits end with this printer, to the point that I deleted printer and re-installed only to find same issue.

There is a chain of filters
https://wiki.debian.org/ThecupsfilterUtility
The command to ascertain which filters will be used:

/usr/sbin/cupsfilter -p laserjet2200.ppd -m printer/foo -e -o number-up=2 --list-filters test.ps
The outcome:

gstopdf
pdftopdf
gstoraster
rastertogutenprint.5.2
Or diagramatically:

+---------+ +----------+ +------------+ +------------------------+
| | pdf | | vnd.cups-pdf | | vnd.cups-raster | |
test.ps=>| gstopdf |====>| pdftopdf |=============>| gstoraster |================>| rastertogutenprint.5.2 |=>PCL
| | | | | | | |
+---------+ +----------+ +------------+ +------------------------+

The first filter, gstopdf, is in the cups-filter package. Is it installed?

root@crosshair:~# /usr/bin/cupsfilter -p HL2270DW.ppd -m printer/foo -e -o number-up=2 --list-filters test.ps
-su: /usr/bin/cupsfilter: No such file or directory

I was looking in synaptic if a cups package was missing, and I saw one that could be it, installed it and printer worked with 2170 driver!
Sorry but I don't remember which one it was.
As usual will not call it solved until further testing.
Thanks for all the help.

The HL-2270DW ppd should give you the option to print duplex. The ppd I sent you has the default Resolution at 1200dpi. The lower 600dpi resolution does not save much toner (dots 4 times smaller but 4 times as many) but will significantly decrease the size of the print job.

let the electric company manage those damn power spikes.
.

During my training a lightening storm struck a power pole and my phone, behind a transformer, fried. Granted, the phone lines were not behind a circuit breaker. If your weather is such that you get electrical storms, I would consider one.

Surge protectors are cheap, Be sure to get one that is fairly large for a laserjet. If Brother anticipated their equipment behind 15amp circuit breakers, that is what I would look for.

Printer is already behind a surge protector, don't know the amp size.
However, electrical problems were solved by replacing battery in UPS connected to computer and router.

I think that missing driver was printer-driver-cups-pdf, now installed.
What I cannot understand is why was the printer working fine before the electrical crash, with this driver missing.

Set this thread to [SOLVED] since printer is working fine since previous post.
Thanks for all the help, especially to shep, whose driver the printer is now using.
