Also, are you on debian wheezy (7.0) now? Your kernel (2.6.32) would suggest you're still on squeeze.

thanks for the tip! taking your advice i installed the radeon firmware (firmware-linux-nonfree) and now that error has disappeared. here is a copy of my current dmesg:

Re: network card issues

Postby alcibiades » 2013-05-13 18:04

i believe the problem is a pnp and irq conflict. from what i can read of the dmesg output, it looks like the ethernet card is not assigned an irq and therefore it is not working. and when i do an lsmod | grep r8169, it shows that nothing is using the r8169 module. is there a way i can disable pnp for the irq that has my ethernet card? or am i barking up the wrong tree?? :?

thanks

Re: network card issues

Postby alcibiades » 2013-05-14 21:29

ok, so, quick update. i decided to try and install the new version of debian to see if there would be any change in my situation. Unfortunately after installing squeeze (version 7, amd64 build) there was not a change in my issue. I believe the problem is with the card not being assigned a irq or i/o address. In searching for a solution I came upon a debian package called nictools-pci. Its an old package but it contians a set of diagnostic tools, one of which is for Realtek chips (my nic is a Netgear GA311 that uses a realtek chipset). When i run the diagnostic tool, using the -f flag, I get this output:

As you can see there is a problem. PCI system error? When I use that same diagnostic tool with the -a flag , to show device registers, I get this output:

rtl8139-diag.c:v2.13 2/28/2005 Donald Becker (becker@scyld.com)
http://www.scyld.com/diag/index.html
Index #1: Found a RealTek (unknown chip type) adapter at 0x1000.
The RealTek chip appears to be active, so some registers will not be read.
To see all register values use the '-f' flag.
RealTek chip registers at 0x1000
0x000: ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff
0x020: ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff
0x040: ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff
0x060: ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff.
* A recognized chip has been found, but it does not appear to exist in
* I/O space. Use the '-f' flag to show the status anyway.

What does this mean? Any suggestions?

Thank you. :)

Re: network card issues

ok, so finally this problem has been solved!! Here is how I did it: out of curiosity I reset the CMOS on my motherboard and, lo and behold, when I restarted my computer the networking card was functioning. I am not sure exactly why this is, but I suspect it has to do with either a faulty motherboard and/or a faulty power supply. So, if anyone else has this problem I recommend resetting your CMOS. :)
