[solved] Debian Wheezy won't reboot.

#1 Post by mr_marmalade »

Hi,

Debian 7 is out, woohoo! I've tried pre-release versions over the last few months but also had this problem: my system won't reboot/restart. It exits KDE & looks like it is going to reboot, but instead it stops sending a signal to the screen so it goes to sleep, the main box stops doing anything & it doesn't reboot. I can't get it to respond by ctrl+alt+del, and the reboot button doesn't work either. All I can do is hold down the power switch for 5 seconds to power it down & then switch it back on. I didn't have this issue on Squeeze.

My system is: Debian Wheezy 7, amd64 & i386 on separate HDDs, KDE, fresh install.
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (socket 939) MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum MoBo (nVidia nForce 3 Ultra chipset), 2GB RAM, ATi Radeon HD4650 AGP 1Gb RAM, SB Live!, Terratec TV card.

I've tried passing GRUB parameters: reboot=efi/bios/acpi/pci, appending noacpi, pci=noacpi, acpi=noirq, pnpacpi=off, nolacpi, but no success yet. I've read in the release notes/eratta about there being some issue with amd64 & UEFI but this is an 8 year old system & doesn't have any modern UEFI to worry about so I'm looking for help on how to fix this please? I've tried chaniging the BIOS power state thing from S1 to S3 but not change either & Squeeze didn't have any problems rebooting.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

you should check KDEs logs, and acpi logs. I doubt this is an acpi problem. try using sudo reboot and see what happens.

su reboot doesn't work either. What KDE logs do you mean?

I've been looking in /var/log/syslog. There isnt a separate acpi log file, it looks as though there used to be a few years ago, but now it just goes into syslog. I don't see any particularly interesting acpi-related lines at the timestamps when i reboot the system. Here is the syslog info from when I reboot:

Wheezy amd64:

Forcing reboot via "reboot -f" doesn't work either.
I installed systemd, it still won't reboot.
I purged network-manager, it still won't reboot.
With/without firmware-linux-nonfree & firmware-realtek makes no difference.
With a different graphics card, an nVidia GeForce2 MX200 32Mb AGP; still won't reboot.

Re: Debian Wheezy won't reboot.

I set the amd64 Wheezy system up to use APM rather than ACPI; I installed the apmd package & booted with GRUB parameters: apm=on acpi=off. The first boot went ok, it took a bit longer than usual as it paused at a point with a 2 minute timeout. I was able to reboot the system for the first time using this APM setup, but the following startup was taking forever and INIT was reporting multiple times as "repawning too fast", i think it was stuck but it allowed me to reboot via ctrl+alt+delete.

Here's the syslog info from the boot (I've had to split the syslog into two parts as it is too long):

One possible thing is that the last line is no longer the "modem-manager: Caught signal 15, shutting down..." one as per when it fails to reboot, it is the "acpid: exiting" one, even although I was booting with acpi=off. Perhaps the order of these matters?

Booting into recovery mode & requesting to reboot doesn't work.

Any more ideas?

You could try disabling modem manager. Looks easily reversible enough...

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=101010&f=42

It seems there are ways to blacklist certain hardware from modem manager's list of things to probe, which might be a more nuanced approach. But if you don't use modem manager, not that much point.
The Forum's search box is terrible. Use site specific search, e.g.

Hi, I've just now tried that; syslog now doesn't show the modem-manager line & "acpid: exiting" is the last line, but it doesn't reboot.

I've tried further GRUB options of reboot=warm/cold/bios/smp/triple/kbd/acpi/efi/pci/force on separate boots; still rebooting fails. This was done after finding: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/366682 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/115011 and http://linux.koolsolutions.com/2009/08/ ... -restarts/

I've now checked through further log files, to try to find one that records all messages that are printed to the screen during boot/reboot/shutdown (note: I have removed GRUB's 'quiet' parameter so quite a lot get spewed out). There's at least one line after "[info] will now restart" that shows when rebooting but it vanishes too quickly to read. It had a timestamp of [300] but after looking through all the log files that were written to around the time of the reboot in /var/log, I cant find any lines that correspond to then, nor are there any interesting messages in there.

I tried some BIOS setting & I've found a solution to the problem. By disabling Cool'n'Quiet the system can now reboot sucsessfully. I've tested it out on both the amd64 & i386 systems, both can now reboot. With C'n'Q disabled, both systems show this in dmesg:

Code: Select all

[Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: No compatible ACPI _PSS objects found.
[Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: Try again with latest BIOS.
I have already have the lastest & last BIOS update for my motherarboard. I would prefer to have C'n'Q enabled, but I guess I can live with it off until it is fixed or there's another workaround. This problem doesn't exist for me in Squeeze. Should I notify someone of this issue within Debian to try to get it fixed in Wheezy?

EDIT: I'm searching further about this issue, I'll mark the thread as solved.
EDIT: Also could try blacklisting the powernow-k8 module rather than disabling C'n'Q in the BIOS.
EDIT: 24/06/13: I just re-installed my Squeeze system & during the install chose to do the online packages update bit, so i think it updated to Devian 6.0.7. It now also exhibits the reboot failure problem, whereas my Squeeze system never had this issue before, so Debian must have back-ported this bug!? I blacklisted powernow-k8 to get round this issue for now. :(
