[SOLVED] Ethernet Cable says it unplugged when its not

Postby topazkitty » 2015-04-23 01:07

Hi, Everyone

I have just installed Debian Jessie for my parents computer since it is supposed to be released on the 25th of april. I am having a horrible time with Ethernet connectivity though. In wheezy my ethernet card worked no issues. Jessie, on the other hand does not recognize this ethernet card cable being plugged in when it is.

The ethernet cable works fine in bios and lights. It also does the same thing in debian rescue mode until it tries to detect network drivers. Then the ethernet light shuts off when network drivers are detected or until debian boots. I was able to get some internet on here with a proprietary wifi stick but it isn't really ideal.

I was wondering why debian isn't able to see that this ethernet card isn't plugged in any more.

Dmesg

Re: Ethernet Cable says it unplugged when its not. Works in

Postby v&n » 2015-04-23 03:40

Why have you posted 'iwconfig' when you need help with Ethernet, not wifi? It may confuse helpers.

Please post outputs of -
Code: Select all
sudo lshw -C network
sudo ethtool eth0
dmesg | grep e1000e

The package 'ethtool' may not be available by default, so you may have to install it beforehand -
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ethtool
v&n

Is there a possibility of hardware failure?

Does the connection work in the live environment?

+1, please confirm that first. If you think it is a problem with jessie, could you confirm the card is functional with any other distro/release? A Wheezy live cd for example?

If the possibility of a broken card is ruled out, please try an old trick first -
Code: Select all
sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off

Then check -
Code: Select all
sudo ethtool eth0

Does it show "Link detected" to be "yes" now?

If not, then at the risk of venturing into unknown territories, I may try some further options like a driver parameter "IndMode" or maybe even some kernel boot parameters.

I tried an ubuntu 14.04 live cd and the ethernet card does not work there either. The computer is 7 years old so maybe it just broke.

EDIT: I tried the cord in my laptop and it works so its something wrong with card then.

Although unlikely, there is a slight chance your hardware broke between installing Wheezy, Jessie and testing Ubuntu on the same hardware. More likely is the differences in OSs. They all use different kernels, with Wheezy obviously being the oldest kernel. Unless you require something Jessie has to offer, sticking with Wheezy is reasonable and there is a decent chance it will receive long term support. Regardless it will be supported for at least a year after the official Jessie release.

Ubuntu 14.04 also uses a much newer kernel. That's why I suggested to try a Wheezy Live cd to confirm. If you have or can download the iso of wheezy live cd, please try that also. If it is not working with that either, you have your latest guess confirmed.

I burned a wheezy live dvd and the ethernet card works with that.

That trick gets the ethernet to work what exactly does that command do and how can i make it permanent?

That's awesome!

The command disables "Autonegotiation" (which I believe is the key difference here) and forces 100 Mbps speed with full duplex. It helps in case where the NIC and the device on the other end of the cable fail to negotiate a compatible speed with Autonegotiation on.

Now why they fail with autonegotiation on is something I have only assumptions about, with no authentic source to back that assumption (maybe there is, but I didn't try hard enough to find that). Here's what I think if you are interested -

The e1000e driver is a gigabit speed driver (1000 Mbps) which can also support lower speeds, but starts trying to communicate with the highest speed it can support, falling back to lower speeds if required. Your card is an old one and only supports upto 10/100 Mbps speeds. Now in this case, I believe the driver e1000e starts its attempts to operate the card with highest speed and MSI-X irq mode (least compatible, but required for highest speeds) that it can support, expecting a response from the card about whether it can support it or not. But instead of responding to the driver, the card totally locks up (due to a bug in the driver or card itself, I can't be sure) when it receives such high speed signals. The ethtool command I proposed explicitly tells the driver to communicate with a lower speed (thus possibly implicitly meaning MSI or legacy irq modes, which are more compatible than MSI-X) which is exactly what the card is supposed to support happily.

If my assumptions above are correct, you may also be able to make the driver work with "IntMode=0" or "IntMode=1" module parameter (IntMode=2 is default value, which means Interrupt Mode "MSI-X").

The command can be made permanent by adding it to your /etc/rc.local file, which can be done with the following command -
Code: Select all
sudo sed -i '/^exit 0/ i ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off' /etc/rc.local

The above command will insert the command just above the last line (which must always be "exit 0") in the rc.local file.

If you wish to tinker further and try the module parameter "IntMode=0" also, just let me know. It can also be made permanent, if works, by writing a conf file in /etc/modprobe.d directory.

Please edit your first post to add [SOLVED] prefix to the title. It will help others by indicating that the thread contains a possible solution to the problem mentioned in the title.

Thanks for the feedback. :)
