BCM4313 802.11bgn doesn't work in Jessie

#1 Post by melior »

Hi everyone!
I need your help with Debian configurating, so I try to use wifi adapter, but it doesn't work.

I have installed Debian Jessie from netinst CD. To reach perfect speed no options were selected. After I installed xfce4 and xfce4-goodies.
I follow some different instructions and no one helps me yet. Wicd show me no avalable wifi connections.

Can you help me to find step-by-step solution?

Thank you.

PS
My notebook was bought 8 years ago. I used Ubuntu 14, Ubuntu 12, etc. and I didn't have any problems with wi-fi connections.

Some outputs of comands...

Hi, melior,

I think it's likely that you have the same model of Broadcom WiFi card which I have in an older HP Mini 210 netbook. If that is the case, you need to follow the Debian Wiki's instructions for installing the "brcm80211" driver:

https://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211
[Debian Wiki]. "brcm80211."
(To install the necessary firmware, etc., you will need to have your laptop connected via a wired Ethernet connection).

However, before you proceed, carefully read through the forum thread below in order to make sure that your Broadcom chipset identically matches the original poster's and mine.

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... 26#p587932
"Faulty WiFi connection." 7 Aug. 2015.

(The card in question is a Broadcom BCM 4313 [14e4:4727]).

Carefully check your output from the commands given here, to make sure they match (are identical to the poster's):

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... 26#p587956

And here:

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... 26#p587967

< I pulled the HP Mini out of the closet to update it, and the Terminal output from those commands is pasted below:

Code: Select all

david@tlacuache:~$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:145c]
	Kernel driver in use: bcma-pci-bridge
03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller [10ec:8136] (rev 05)
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1584]
	Kernel driver in use: r8169

Code: Select all

david@tlacuache:~$ lsmod | egrep 'b43|ssb|brcm|wl'
brcmsmac 490722 0
cordic 12336 1 brcmsmac
brcmutil 12941 1 brcmsmac
mac80211 421532 1 brcmsmac
cfg80211 350041 2 brcmsmac,mac80211
bcma 36446 1 brcmsmac
>

Finally, after you've successfully installed the brcmsmac driver, follow the command given here to blacklist the "b43" driver:

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... 26#p588002

Please post back if you have any doubts, or run into problems.

HTH and Good luck.

Despite its annoying "sometimes works, sometimes doesn't" behaviour, the combination of BCM4313 + brcmsmac has become particularly interesting to me. I would be very curious to see OP's feedback, although I don't know if I would get any time to contribute to the thread, if needed.

PS:
Thanks for saving my time, kalwisti. I didn't remember those posts. :)

Thanks for chiming in, v&n. :) I'm glad you're watching this thread, since you know much more about WiFi stuff than I do.

Regarding the performance of brcmsmac on my HP Mini, I'd say that it has been very good. The connection is reliable (i.e., it almost never drops / disconnects) and the signal strength is typically good. I have no desire to experiment with any other drivers at this point.
