Someone is sure to ask, "why upgrade if everything was working fine", so I'll do it first.

Have you tried downgrading to the working versions? Whatever video hardware you're running is probably also relevant.

There's a report of the same issue on the backports mailing list--it looks like it was a mistake in a dependency that causes it, and that they should be able to fix it.

Had the same issue, but it was caused by an older libdrm. You might check that.

Packages from jessie-backports have to be specified for upgrades with the "-t" on the command line, or you can temporarily set Synaptic to prefer packages from there.

Mesa has a lot of packages in Debian. Besides the obvious ones there are some libraries too.
A list can be obtained by searching for "mesa" in synaptic. Good for checking the versions to see if something was missed. You should check for versions that look like the old mesa.
Upgrading is done with

aptitude install -t jessie-backports packagename1 packagename2...
