nvidia driver issues

#1 Post by 987687 »

Running debian testing with an nvidia geforce 210. This is its line from lspci:

Code: Select all

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [GeForce 210] (rev a1)
For a couple months I've had to run the nouveau driver because the nvidia driver (340.98) won't work. Same issue installing it the "debian way" or downloading right from nvedia. The driver installs fine, but has weird symptoms ...

When I log in and type startx, it spits out the log below. If I type startx again it goes to a black screen and is completely unresponsive to any input whatsoever, I have to ssh in to reboot the machine.

Everyone says the nouveau driver is great.... I think it sucks. It makes graphics in chrome glitchy, makes matlab graphics ugly with software GL rendering, and it makes diptrace really slow and laggy. PCB design is kind of painful without the hardware rendering.

Code: Select all

I really don't wanna have to buy a more modern card to carry on with my business... That kinda defeats the point of running linux in the first place. The beauty of linux for me is that i can run my 8 year old machine and it keeps up just fine.

Presumably you've installed the correct headers and nvidia-legacy-340xx-kernel-dkms?

The package page says it has been tested with kernels up to 4.8, however there is fairly regular issues with proprietary drivers failing to work with particular kernel versions (especially in testing where they change often).
