I am also have a similar problem, my post is titled "Wifi will not work" and I also see another post called "Wifi card not detected after installing firmware" by M0rtiferrimus. I think the cause of our wifi problems is Debian shipping with such an old kernel. I'm still trying to backport to a newer kernel. Hope this help send you in the right direction.ckosloff wrote:I just installed the stable version in an HP Pavilion laptop, installed wicd and cannot get wifi, it is not detected, what am I missing?

What a ridiculous assertion.driftwood wrote:I think the cause of our wifi problems is Debian shipping with such an old kernel.
The cause of your problem is buying brand new hardware and expecting it to work with Debian's stable release just before the next version is due out, what on Earth were you thinking?
@OP: please provide details of your hardware, you have been here long enough to know better than to start a thread with zero information.
Code: Select all

Thanks Head_on_a_Stick, I was wondering about this myself, and could not seeUnread postby Head_on_a_Stick » 2017-01-16 14:16driftwood wrote:

What a ridiculous assertion.
how a "older" kernel would be the cause of this,... since I am using rather "old" old stable versions, with "old" kernels,... one has been updated, because of security updates, but any way, using older kernels then what the current stable version ships with, and never have had the problems that so many people are having with "wifi",....
But then I am also using "older hardware", as well. . Seems like if it was a problem
with "with such an old kernel.",.... then I wouldn't be able to have "wifi ".

We need more information, details on the Computer, as asked ny H_O_A_S,Postby ckosloff » 2017-01-16 08:49
I just installed the stable version in an HP Pavilion laptop,
I have 2 HP Pavilion s,... they are really nice, but they still have different models,
one is smaller, and newer,...any way, I did have Debian 8 on one of them, and
had the wifi working just fine,... so I really do not think it is a issue with the kernel,
But any way, with out more details, it is any bodies guess about what the problem
might be.

Head_on_a Stick, I may not be as computer savvy as 99% of the people on here but there is no excuse for your arrogance. A laptop that is almost a year old is hardly brand new in the computer world. From what I have been researching the past couple days most of the wifi firmware issues that people seem to be having are from the firmware would be solve by using a newer kernel that supported the newer hardware, making the work a-rounds less common. Like I said,I might be as computer savvy as most of the people here, but it is still a valid question to ask by the kernel used is not more current. There might very well be a good technical reason for it, but is does seem like a lot of people are backporting the kernelHead_on_a_Stick wrote: What a ridiculous assertion.

I'm new to Debian and not up to speed on the release cycle, linux kernel 4.3 was released in November of 2015, hardly brand new at this point. The kernel is around 4.9 now. The Debian 8.6 that I installed has kernel 3.16 that was released sometime in 2014. Even if there is a good technical reason for it, I still don't think it is wrong for a newbie to wonder the reason.
So once again, I don't see any reason for your arrogance!

Re: No wifi detected
Almost all current internal wifi hardware requires non-free firmware--are they even making the Atheros ath5k and ath9k adapters any more? That was the big one that didn't need the firmware. I don't think there are any currently made USB adapters that don't require firmware either--all you'll find are Realtek, Ralink, maybe a leftover Atheros one, and heaven help you if you have a Broadcom USB dongle. All this is extensively documented--that's just how Debian rolls.
Anyway, did you check to see if a wifi interface was created with
as root or with sudo? You have to manually tell wicd which interface to use in its settings if you have one--this is also extensively documented.

Re: No wifi detected
It was missing firmware after all, firmware-realtekis not included in non-free firmware but is in the repo

No thanks are necessary, Citizen. Just part of the job.It was missing firmware after all, firmware-realtek is not included in n⃥o⃥n⃥-⃥free firmware but is in the non-free section of the repo.
