[SOLVED] Upgrade to kernel 4.9.x renders my WiFi useless..

Postby scdas141 » 2017-01-25 19:29

Hey guys..

I have the TP-LINK TL-WN823N Wifi Adapter for which I am using the Github repo drivers at https://github.com/Mange/rtl8192eu-linux-driver ..

Everytime I upgrade I have been succesfully able to re-compile the package using 'make && make install'.. Here is the Terminal output of a succesful install:

Code: Select all
root@ik--pc:/home/ik/Downloads/rtl8192eu-linux-driver-master# make && make install

I don't see any fatal build errors, just warnings that a newer version of gcc might throw up when an older version might not. If you are using Stretch, I think you can try installing the gcc-4.9, g++-4.9, and cpp-4.9 packages and exporting the environment builds in the terminal before your build to see if that makes any difference:

Code: Select all
export CC=gcc-4.9
export CXX=g++-4.9
export CPP=cpp-4.9
export LD=gcc-4.9
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Foliate 1.5.3, Minitube 3.1, wine-staging 4.12, Virtual Box 5.2.32 & 6.0.10, Pale Moon 28.6.1, Waterfox 56.2.12

Hi steve..

I am using Debian sid, "Sparkylinux".. Unfortunately I have to dual-boot bet'n my non-working Linux and a windows 7 OS, I'll export the packages and let you know..

EDIT:

Tried the export but getting the same error messages.. Finally reverted back to 4.8.0-15..

I hope the Linux gurus out there do check out the Realtek Wifi incompatibility with kernel 4.9.x..

Even the "firmware-realtek_20161130-2_all.deb" package cannot make my wifi going..

Yes, my fault, but some users kindly help me to explain in more detail. Maybe, an administrator wants to delete mine as you seem to explain this issue better than me.

Do you get the same problem with the 4.9 Liquorix kernel?

Hey steve..

Yes, very much so.. Infact I had installed Liquorix long-back since kernel 4.6.x, whose upgrades did not cause any issue untill I first upgraded to kernel 4.9-0-1.. The funny thing is that the driver as well as the WiFi Adapter both seem to be working, only as far as leading to endless-spinning of the connection icon without ever connecting.. not even once..

But as soon as I revert back to 4.8.0-15 from the "Advanced options" of the Grub menu, I can connect at once.. I highly suspect that this is an issue of either the core-kernel or the libraries of 4.9.x..

Thanks again

EDIT:

PS. I think this is such a hot Topic, that within a day there has been 19 people watching the issue on GitHub probably many of them having undergone similar issues..

SOLVED at last!!

Postby scdas141 » 2017-01-27 20:43

Hey everyone..

I managed to solve the issue.. Thanks a million to thamer from Github.. :D :D

https://github.com/Mange/rtl8192eu-linux-driver/issues/18

Just adding "8192eu" via text editor to "/etc/modules" did the trick.. what I did step-by-step:

step-1.. open file manager as root and go to "etc" folder..

step-2.. there you will find a text-like file known as "modules"

step-3.. Right click it & open with leafpad or whatever text editor you have.. Just add the word "8192eu" without the quotation marks..

see image below:

Image

step-4.. go to https://github.com/Mange/rtl8192eu-linux-driver. click on "Clone or Download" green button.. Extract the zip file to any location that you want.. Open a root editor in that folder and run "make && make install"

step-5.. Reboot and you will get back ur wifi

Now I have my wifi back..

Actually, I have put together a tutorial for new users or people looking for detailed information on how to compile the Github driver..

Thanks again, everyone...

It would be nice if that driver was added to the kernel. I had to compile the same driver 6 months ago to get wireless to work.

You do that by editing the subject line in your first post
example:
Code: Select all
