Did you try running 'fsck' manually, like it tells you to do ?
Quite often that will repair the problems.
Also it would help to know what version of Debian, etc.

My Debian Version: Gnu Grub Version 2.02~beta2-22+deb8u1
How do you run the fsck manually? (tying "run fsck" does nothing, and "fsck run" just tells me "fsck from util-linux 2.25.2").

Re: *Debian GNU/Linux: fsck exited with status code 4
just
fsck /dev/sda1
in single user mode
fsck /dev/sda1
in single user mode
DebianStable
Code: Select all
$ vrms
No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Thank you both very much.
If anyone has this same issue, for the record, after the manual fsck, I hit Y (yes) to all of the fixes it offered.

Your welcome, glad it worked, sorry I forgot to mention there would be the choices yes or no,
and that is what I do , just select yes each time,...
Hopefully this does not occur again for some time, if ever,..if it does keep occurring often , that indicates there are some other more serious problems that need to be figured out.
