I don't is this sis module suitable for SIS670.

Peter.

Thanks, you are right : sis-drv is not for SiS671 and I need sisimedia_drv instead.
I downloaded from RPM source (https://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/magei ... 86_64.html) and converted with alien the following driver built on the 14th of December of 2016 :
x11-driver-video-sisimedia_0.9.1-10.20091203_amd64.deb
I read also in the documentation that with older 2.6 kernels a patch to the kernel was needed. I saw nothing about newer kernels.

Using the following xorg.conf I ran#X -config /root/xorg.conf
which started X11 for about 10seconds then the screen remained black steady.
xorg.conf file :
Code: Select all
Section "Device"
Identifier "sis671"
Driver "sisimedia"
Screen 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "tft"
Option "PreferredMode" "1280x800"
Gamma 1
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "sis671"
Monitor "tft"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 1280 800
Depth 24
Modes "1280x800@60" "1024x768@60"
EndSubSection
EndSection

# Section "ServerFlags"
# Option "IgnoreABI" "True"
# EndSection

In my post dated 2017.04.04 at 10:46 I read in the /var/log/xorg.log file :

[36.000]
X.Org X server 1.19.2

[36.393]
sisimedia compiled for 1.19.0 module version = 0.8.0

Does the fact that 1.19.2 and 1.19.0 are different can explain that I cannot start X11 ?
Should I search for the source of this sisimedia driver for Debian stretch and compile it in my laptop with Debian 9 64-bit running ?

but still, we need to see this wrong data.
it's the only way to understand all the comments made and how this thread (hopefully) evolves toward a solution.
please, just don't do this anymore. thanks.

I explain what I did wrongly in these posts, which I have deleted, after each attempt to start the graphic server I copied :
- the xorg.conf file used ;
- the /var/log/xorg.0.log file resulting of this attempt AND I did it wrongly as I copied the /var/log/xorg.0.log file I found after having restarted the computer in the normal way, which was with "vesa" driver. This file brought no information about the problem.

Now I copy the :
- xorg.conf file used ;
- /var/log/xorg.0.log file resulting from this aborted attempt.

I proceed like this :
- start the laptop in recovery mode ;
- run "# xorgconfig --textmode" which built a xorg.conf.new file ;
- run "# X -config /root/xorg.conf.new"
- after abort and having returned to # I open Midnight Commander #mc
and copy in a safe place the resulting /var/log/xorg.0.log file

xorg.conf.new :

My last attempts show a large number of (EE) errors at the end of the process resulting in server terminating with error (1).
I could also read :
Code: Select all
[    92.742]
X.Org X Server 1.19.2

and
Code: Select all
93.156] (II) Module sisimedia: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[    93.156]    compiled for 1.19.0, module version = 0.8.0

but I don't know if the two versions should have the same number : 1.19.2 ?

The answer may be in the last lines but I'm unable to analyse them and make conclusions :
Code: Select all
[    98.656] (EE) /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied

Re: Debian 9 stretch with SiS 671/771

Postby lfgsilva » 2017-08-02 13:27

Hello, i'm using 4.11.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.11.6-1 (2017-06-19) x86_64 GNU/Linux and the [SiS] 771/671 is working.... well i'm using SparkyLinux 5.0 MinimalGUI, so the Debian Testing.
what i did was using #alien -d xf86-video-sisimedia-0.9.1.0-3.5.x86_64.rpm to create a .deb package. this .rpm package is from https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... -sisimedia . After that, i get the last PClinuxOs distribution and with a live usb disc i get the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. And thats it... enjoy :D
Many Thanks to René Krell : https://build.opensuse.org/user/show/renekrell
and i'm sorry for may poor english
