How do I change my display to a higher resolution?

#1 Post by momast »

I am a newbie. My computer supports until 3840x2160, although in the Settings it is only up to 1024x768. Please tell me how to change it to a higher resolution. If there is something I need to post, please tell me.

edit : just tried by using the debian website and after doing this apt-get install -t jessie-backports nvidia-driver
i get :

you need to give more information as to what GPU and Debian version you are using. If you are getting an error message posting it also helps. My suggestion is to look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log searching for telltale lines containing (EE), meaning error. You might find what is actually preventing your system from using a better resolution.
Debian == { > 30, 000 packages }; Debian != systemd
The worst infection of all, is a false sense of security!
It is hard to get away from CLI tools.

I have a Intel i5 4690K and a GTX 1080. I have not yet install the GPU Drivers of NVIDIA. I am using Debian 8.7. I dont see any error as I go to settings > displays > 1 and over there I only see 1024x768 and 800x600.

Give more details and don't assume everyone uses the same graphical interface. The best thing to do is to look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log to find what I instructed you earlier. Keep in mind, Debian Stable (8.*) is not usually used on newer hardware.

Also if Debian 8 is not used on newer hardware, then what is on newer hardware?
Here, it is very long.

Yuck, way too long! In the future, please use the code boxes.

You can also give us an idea of your hardware and graphical situation by installing inxi and providing the shorter output of

Code: Select all

inxi -F
(run it as a standard user)

(Yikes version 2.0) In the future, run inxi as a standard user, as I requested. It can't get a full output as root. Plus it's very poor practice to run anything as root unless it specifically needs it.

Anyway, it looks like your Intel GPU, if any, is not exposed to the system. I would say that your 2016 Nvidia ( GTX 1080?) card is not fully supported by Jessie's 2014-vintage nouveau driver, and you should try the proprietary Nvidia driver in the nonfree section of jessie-backports.

This says the 1080 needs a minimum nvidia-driver version of 367.27, so jessie-backport's current 375.39 supports it.

Not so much a solution as some suggestions for things to investigate and eliminate...

I'd suspect this as the root of your problem. The open-source nVidia driver (nouveau) may or may not be compatible with your card, at which point you'll end up running the lowest-common-denominator (and low resolution) VESA driver if you don't have the proprietary driver installed.

Edit: Snap. Too slow. Ah well.

Wait.... what?

@OP => Maybe try Fedora?

Yes, the jessie-backports proprietary driver is the only chance to get that working on Jessie. We can see that the nouveau driver isn't hacking it. I have a similar situation with a newer 940MX card in my laptop that works using the same solution, except for Bumblebee switching graphics.

Momast, you can always go back and edit your posts to put the terminal outputs in a code box. Please?

to make sure you really have 2 gpus in there:

Code: Select all

lspci -k | grep -iEA5 'vga|3d|display'
i'm not sure if you'll be able to run the required software (bumblebee?) to use both gpus.

Yes my Intel has a GPU integrated and my GPU although it seems not to show it.

Code: Select all

rr@debian:~$ lspci -k | grep -iEA5 'vga|3d|display'

So do I follow the instructions from Debian or just download from NVIDIA ?

I want to use both, but in Fedora the mouse does not move while I try to install it, so I just left it and decided to install Debian and then other OS. I'm looking to install others, but for now this one only.

is this NOT a laptop?
have you put the nvidia gpu in there?
maybe the bios allows only for one gpu to be active?
because linux doesn't see any intel gpu.

so, install the nvidia proprietary driver, it's really all you can do.

Inxi says a desktop, so the Intel GPU must be disabled in the UEFI setup.
