Black screen after attempt to install KDE and suppressed it

#1 Post by LutinRose »

Hello,
I don't know where to post this, so sorry if it is the wrong section. I already posted this message in Reddit at /r/debian..
My University is lending me a french Debian (Jessie 8.10) HP Laptop for my C and Unix classes and I have made a pretty huge mistake because I used less than half of my brain.

I have Gnome installed but I wanted to have KDE also. I went to this website : https://wiki.debian.org/KDE and I followed the steps to install "Kde Plasma Desktop".
The last code I wrote was : aptitude install ~t^desktop$ ~t^kde-desktop$

I restarted and realised that KDE environment didn't showed up at my login screen so I figured I still had to install KDE environment because everything wasn't installed. I opened Synaptic and tried to install more packages starting with "kde-", because I thought they were required.
The installation process was taking forever (more than an hour) and I thought that it was due to a bug or something, so I used ctrl + c to stop the installation even though Synaptic told me It could break the system (1st big mistake).
I then restarted my laptop, and I realized that it gave me a black screen, and then this screen : https://imgur.com/J0wH7Vy

"I'll fix that" I thought (2nd big mistake). So I rebooted, pressed ESC and then chose System Restore : https://imgur.com/nGaS08f
The screen displayed correctly. I went to Synaptic and removed the package by choosing "select for complete removal".
Then, to fully delete kde I used :
apt-get remove kdm kde* (https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... ts-333559/)
apt-get update
apt-get remove kde* (https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... ts-333559/)
apt-get autoremove (https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... e-packages)

I restarted and... black screen. I chose System Restore the screen became black and then froze on the weird white lines of the 1st link. I tried 2 more time, It didn't work. Since I didn't know what to do I picked "Network (PXE) Boot", but I didn't do much thing and displaying a black screen. I restarted and selected "System restore" and now I have an image. Since I have a image now on my System Restore, I didn't tried to restart to the normal boot.

here are the information I have gathered so far :
$DESKTOP_SESSION and it returned bash: gnome : command not found
ls /usr/bin/*session and it returned : usr/bin/dbus-run-session and usr/bin/gnome-session
cd: move me to the directory /home/localuser

The following packages have been completely removed :
kde-l10n-fr
kde-runtime-data
task-french-kde-desktop

The following packages have been removed :
kate
kde-runtime
kstars
libkateinterfaces4

The History log in /var/log/apt/ give me this (the name "gnome-control-center" appears) :

So, what did I do wrong ? Can I fix this without reinstalling the entire Debian system ? Should my parents have aborted me ?
Thank you for your attention and your help !

Re: Black screen after attempt to install KDE and suppressed

#2 Post by bw123 »

I restarted and... black screen. I chose System Restore the screen became black and then froze on the weird white lines of the 1st link. I tried 2 more time, It didn't work. Since I didn't know what to do I picked "Network (PXE) Boot", but I didn't do much thing and displaying a black screen. I restarted and selected "System restore" and now I have an image. Since I have a image now on my System Restore, I didn't tried to restart to the normal boot.
I don't know what this "System Restore" is, but it sounds like it works. I don't understand what you mean by "I have an image now" on your system restore, but I would try that. See if you can get the system back to the default setup.

If that works, then do a little more research and make a backup before you do anything else. And don't run stuff like remove kde* I didn;t see any such command on your links, but I did see warnings about blindly hitting yes to apt-get autoremove.

It's not the end of the world, but yeah I know it's confusing right now. You just need a little better understanding and that takes time.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your answer bw123.

"System Restore" is the 7th option I can choose on my HP Startup Menu after pressing ESC (cf. https://imgur.com/nGaS08f ). "I have an image now" means that the screen is no longer black and freezing after, and, that I can log in and use my computer correctly.
Sorry for the wrong link about remove kde*, I fixed it.

What about contacting someone in the IT dept at the university? Ask about another setup with kde instead. Whoever setup the restore thing was pretty smart, they'll probably be willing to help out. Or they might explain why they want you to use gnome, if it is required for your classes.

Study hard C is awesome, you will have a lot of fun. When i took 'intro to c' they had borland turbo for windows *yuk) and the instructor was a visual basic guy, it took us 2 weeks to figure out hello.c on the stupid gui compiler.
