Encrypted disk - Change /home

Postby arivar » 2018-05-05 21:42

Hi,

I have successfully installed debian 9, but I want to make a change in my configuration. At the moment all the partitions are on my SSD driver:

NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 119.2G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot/efi
├─sda2 8:2 0 244M 0 part /boot
└─sda3 8:3 0 118.5G 0 part
└─sda3_crypt 254:0 0 118.5G 0 crypt
├─debian--vg-root 254:1 0 28G 0 lvm /
├─debian--vg-swap_1 254:2 0 15.9G 0 lvm [SWAP]
└─debian--vg-home 254:3 0 74.7G 0 lvm /home
sdb 8:16 0 931.5G 0 disk
sdc 8:32 1 30G 0 disk

I would like to change /home to a new (encrypted) partition on my sdb driver, which is HDD and larger. Any one know how can I do that?

Yes, but are you sure you want to move all /home from the SSD to a hard disk ? It will slow down access to everything in /home (browser cache, mailboxes, config files...).

You're right. Would you kind suggest a better setup ? Thanks

Has some measured time difference between ssd and hd?

A few years ago computer magazines wrote, that best thing to speed up system is to change to ssd. So I bought one, installed / threre, /home, /var and /tmp on own partitions, but did not notice any difference. Boot is even slower, because my pc run out of sata connections, and had to buy pci-card, which sata connectors. Boot is slower, because bios does not see root partition.

Or maybe it is just my brains, which I should soon replace :D

Leave /home on the SSD and store big data files on the hard disk.
