Debian Testing : Stuck right before login screen (gdm)

#1 Post by Manumerique »

New thread following this one http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=137404
On this reddit thread, "paines" seems to have the same problem : https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comment ... my_system/

I'm on Debian Testing, Gnome DE, kernel 4.16.1, on an ASUS F200M with a Samsung SSD.

I was on kernel 4.15.3, and the following problem happened after the 4.16.1 update :

I'm stuck right before login screen, with usual tty1 output, no obvious output error (but I don't know where to search for logs)
When logging into tty2, launching x server with startx, I was automatically sent back to tty1 after a few seconds.
Same without GUI, tty2 cursor stops blinking, same issue.

However, I tried booting with older kernels (4.15.3, 4.15.2) without success.
I tried installing haveged, without success.
I tried installing rng-tools5, without success.
I tried reinstalling gdm3, without success.
I removed gdm3 and installed lightdm instead, and it works as a temporary solution.

The problem (at least mine) seems definitely tied to gdm3 (version 3.28.1 in the repo).
Can someone help me ? :)

Might be related to SSDs and 4.16 kernel. I don't have the problems described on my Sid system on HDD running GNOME.
Laptop specs:

Code: Select all

CPU: Broadwell Pentium 3825U
Intel HD graphics
AMD Radeon R5 330m
8 GB RAM
Broadcom Wi-Fi

^Solid state drive. Those fast drives everyone talks about since forever. They make your computer faster.
