bw123, I`m here for help and I don`t mean to be difficult but it seems to "ME" if you look at what I have posted I have been doing just that for a day now. If you see an error please tell me. Any other commands just tell me and I will post the results. I`m here for a while tonight. Thanks

cd (change directory) means change your terminal to the directory of the extracted zip file. You haven't done that.
The dot in the command refers to the current directory. It won't work if you run it from anywhere else.
I unzipped the file in Downloads directory so:

As you seem new to this I'll give you another shortcut - tab completion. When you cd, do cd rtl<Tab>. When you press the tab key, it will find the matching directory (or file) and fill in the rest for you. It's a great shortcut and ensures your command shows the correct location.

sunrat, Your right on several accounts. I`m kinda new at this and only my 2nd install. My 1st was a low power (pentium4) the week deb9 came out. The cd command has been confusing to me. I could not understand when someone said "cd to the extracted directory" ,or "you must be in that directory when you execute the command". How do you do that? The terminal is on the desktop. You can`t type from a file ! When I copied your command and the downloads path came up after my root name it hit me. That is how you know you are in that directory ? Right ? I then did "m-a prepare" and "dkms add ." and "dkms install" and everything took some time and worked. Thanks for taking the time, reading my commands and walking me thru it. I feel I have everything needed downloaded and installed properly. I still don`t have a connection yet but I think the worst is behind me. iwconfig still returns this :

Did you reboot? That should load the driver.
Check if the correct driver is loaded with lsmod. Check for rtl8192eu, if any other rtl drivers are loaded, post here. I once had the system load rtl8188eu instead which didn't work and blocked the correct one.
And you said you have installed firmware-realtek?
You should be able to configure with Network Manager after that.
Also if you have wired network attached it may take precedence over wireless and stop wireless from working.

Wireless is one of the trickiest things to deal with in Debian because of proprietary software and hardware, but once you get that beat the rest will seem easy.
I'd suggest you read up on Debian package management and basic terminal commands as well. It all helps!

Yes, the Realtek deb package I loaded with Synaptic. The connection manager show "all" available networks. When I click on mine,1st time I was prompted for my password. Now it will try connect for a moment and appears to connect but when you go for a web page its blank. Network Connections shows it as "never used". It appears to me only the proper driver is loaded. My only guess is that you have two or more conflicting drivers.

Debian doesn't recognize your Wi-Fi card, if any. That's what I think, might be wrong.
inxi should at least show the device, but without the driver.
lspci too.

I agree the outputs of those commands would indicate that but why can my network manager see every wifi in my neighborhood including mine ?

What you can do is try a Live image of Ubuntu 18.04. It should see your exact card and driver. And, if all else fails, just stick to the Ubuntu. There is no shame in being pragmatic.

Thanks Wheeler, your advice is appreciated but I got baptized by fire my 3rd post here and I won`t be moving. My 1st little low power machine (pentium4) I`m just thrilled with. Just streams content 12-14 hrs a day, every day. I would know more but it never breaks and I never have to fix it. But don`t stop advising me. This is just some stupid problem and I`m missing something. I have some other dongles I might try since I`m fairly confident I can install drivers now. Any other suggestions besides Ubuntu ?

Then it would be best to try those dongles. Atheros or Intel should work well, so I hope you have one of those.
For Intel cards, install firmware-iwlwifi package from the non-free repo.

It's a USB device so won't show in lspci. You can find out what driver is loaded for a usb device with any of these commands:

lsmod shows rtl8xxxu module loaded which is probably why it's not working so needs to be blacklisted.
As root, create a new file in /etc/modprobe.d/ called realtek.conf (name doesn't actually matter as long as it ends in .conf) and paste this in it:

blacklist rtl8xxxu
Then reboot and hopefully this time... :)

As I said earlier, wifi can be a PITA particularly for certain devices. Luckily for you I've been through all this to get a similar device working. No guarantees though. There's more tweaks that may affect it (rfkill, power saving, random MAC address) but hopefully it works now.

PS: I doubt this would work ootb in Ubuntu as the kernel default driver is wrong and the Github package was made to address this. As the device is recognised in lsusb, it should be possible to get it working with the right driver.

OK, Here is where we are at now. I applied the fix exactly as said and nothing. Since I blacklisted the driver it will no longer show up in inxi -N. Like you said on page 1 this chipset is unfriendly. I`m finished with this rtl8192 and sorry I have wasted everyones time with it. New plan. My other working Deb 9.4.0 machine has a Dlink DWA160.B2 ver.2.40 adapter working perfectly. I ran inxi -N got the exact driver version. Back to this new machine again, I searched Deb packages and found the driver . Installed the package with Synaptic. Run inxi -N and lsusb and it shows exact driver and adapter as was working on low power machine.

The DWA160 now flashes. It shows more bars in network manager. Click on my network. add password. Spins till it times out. NO connection. ?????

Could be the random mac address problem that seems to have affected many people (myself included) it can be easily fixed if this is the case.

OK, After much pain I have SOLVED my wireless problem. It has persisted with RealTek, Ralink and Atheros wifi adapters. I have added and removed other drivers from other sources including the Deb software packages to no avail. However the fix I have documented exactly in order which included editing my wpa_supplicant.conf file. Some steps may have been unnecessary but were done to cross of my list so to speak. I would like to share my results in hopes that others my age would not have to reread the material so many times like I did for it to sink in. What would be the best way to post that ? Its quit lengthy and detailed and I would like to post the commands exactly as I copied them. Remember, some of this was found online pertaining to other distros. As a newbie I have no way of knowing if it is correct. I can only say it did work well. I would like to see it edited for mistakes by those here that know. Thanks
