Updates available with KDE, no update found with Xfce

Postby highContrast » 2018-06-28 07:50

Hi all

I have on the same PC a desktop installation with KDE and some virtual machines with minimal software installation and Xfce.
The KDE version is regularly updated, while the virtual machines didn't receive any update for several months. At the beginning I thought that the difference was due to the bigger number of packages installed with the KDE version, but on both of them I have Firefox-ESR which has been updated twice on KDE and never on the VMs. I checked with apt-get upgrade, but nothing new is detected, so I'm beginning to wonder whether there is something wrong with Synaptic configuration, but except for the sources.list which seems correct I don't know what I should check.

Is it possible that nothing was update for several months? If not any idea about how to investigate this issue?

BTW. This is the sources.list on one of the VMs:

Code: Select all
#If you also want the contrib and non-free components
deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free

#Backports are needed for virtualbox guest additions
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main contrib
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main contrib

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free

You say you have tried apt-get upgrade, but did you first perform apt-get update (or I use apt update but it is essentially the same)?

Thank you. apt-get update did the trick. But now I am wondering why. I used apt-get because Synaptic interface always hanged for a minute and then didn't show any change, so I suspected something was not working, but I thought that apt-get update was needed only after some configuration change and I can't remember changing anything.

no, it updates the repo databases and should always precede an upgrade.

Agree with Debiman, and also you can do this from Synaptic Package Manager if you prefer a GUI by clicking the Reload button.

It's because nobody's found the number of security problems in XFCE that have been exposed and patched in Stretch's KDE.

You can look at the changelog for KDE and XFCE packages at packages.debian.org to see what updates have been made--xfce=nada.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: GIMP 2.10.6, Pale Moon 28.1.0, wine-staging 3.16, qBittorrent 4.1.3, Linux kernel 4.18.8, virtualbox 5.2.18
