Re: Why is my Jessie system trying to upgrade to Stretch AGA

Is it possible that Synaptic is an issue? While I use Synaptic for package search and small jobs I never use it for upgrades no matter how short. Yes, it is much better now than it used to be but it is still a GUI when CLI is more reliable.

Anything is possible, but I see no reason to suspect it more than anything else. I like Synaptic, as it lets me see everything beforehand, and I'd have to click several times before I could accidentally install/remove/update something.

I think that jessie-backports left the "deb9" in a couple packages that they backported from Stretch security updates, but I'd like to see the whole package version for as many as you can provide. If you can't copypaste the data, a screenshot would be the next best thing.

I should have gone ahead and done that, but at the time didn't since I know that's normally frowned upon. I wish I could replicate it now, but it stopped doing it several hours after I re-started this thread. It was not a one time deal on the 26th. I reloaded the package information again right away and came up with the same updates. Then several hours later, after having made no changes, I was going to start trying to figure out the issue, it was gone upon the next package information reload. That's why I'm thinking it may not be a problem on my end, but something on the repo side.

Ok here we go... this time I recorded what it's asking.

Reminder: I normally use Synaptic, but I can't copy and paste from it. So I went to apt-get, but it doesn't format it nicely, and neglects versions for packages that get held back. I'm supplementing with some screenshots of Synaptic.

Code: Select all

 apt-get upgrade -s
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libegl1-mesa-drivers libopenvg1-mesa
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
Done
The following packages have been kept back:

I see Stretch is supposed to have a point release tomorrow.... Jessie is supposed to be done with that, However.

Doesn't look like an upgrade to stretch, looks like you are using the entire jessie-backports repo. At some point you maybe (dist? full?)upgraded everything to bpo versions, and AFAIK once you install a pkg from backports it will be upgraded from backports. Might be a priority issue with repo policy? A synaptic setting to alwasy use backports? a configuration somewhere to prefer jessie-backports, maybe apt.conf Default-Release?

p.s. You can sometimes copy from gui windows by pressing shift while selecting with the mouse.

Take ‘stable’ out of your sources and replace is with ‘jessie’.

Hmm...bpo is back ports? I have quite a few things that have bpo in the package name. I can't think of anything that I specifically upgraded from backports, but I've had this install shortly after Jessie was released so it's been awhile. The thing that doesn't make sense to me, is that it want's to do a massive upgrade, and I never let it... and then after a day or two it's back to normal. I run Synaptic every few days.
p.s. You can sometimes copy from gui windows by pressing shift while selecting with the mouse.
I can highlight in Synaptic, but when I right click I get Synaptic specific choices no "copy", or no menu at all.... I see now that If I go all the way to my last chance to decline the upgrade I can click on details and I can copy that. I can't do it now though. As I mentioned above that the problem goes away after awhile... it's gone. I re-enabled backports and reloaded the Package Information, and it's still just Chrome.

It's got to have something to do with point releases as that's when it seems to happen.

The only "stable" I have is for Chrome, but that's a Google repo, not Debian.

I just did a search for bpo in the version number with Synaptic... not sure if that will grab everything or not.

OT:
it makes no sense to use that version of youtube-dl, even if it's the backported.
youtube-dl needs to be updated continuously because it's a constant race against google changing the api again and again...
i don't understand why debian maintainers took it on at all.

Yep, thats why I downloaded it from git and placed it in a folder named bin in my home directory.

Without going into why I would try to figure it out this way. first thing I;d do would be to comment out everything in sourse.list except

Code: Select all

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
run synaptic and see if synaptic still wants to grad packages from stretch

Than if and only if - synaptic looks like it's working correctly again
I'd start uncommenting repos one at a time starting with security and checking synaptic for issues.

Worth a shot?

Didn't I do the quicker version of that when I disabled backports? The problem I seem to run into is that it often doesn't last long enough to do much troubleshooting. It behaved normally when backports were disabled, and then when I re-enabled backports and reloaded the package information it was still fine.

I'm starting to think I'm just going to have to deal with this until getting a new machine and upgrading to Stable.

I didn't know that. I think I've only used it once.

Yes, all packages with "bpo8" in the version are coming from jessie-backports. Your system is working correctly as designed when you keep the backports repository enabled at all times. However, that's really not how the backports maintainers recommend the repository be used--instead only enable it when you really want to upgrade something from backports.

Since it's not really trying to upgrade to Stretch, only some packages from jessie-backports that kept "deb9u" in the version, please mark this thread [SOLVED] by adding that to the title of your first post in the thread,

But it's not solved... I'm not doing anything to fix it. It goes away on it's own after a day or two. I'm not allowing the upgrades to take place. It wants to upgrade a huge amount of packages to a much newer version, and I don't let... then it all goes away, and I only get minor upgrades as usual.

This time around I think I've determined that it is an issue with backports, as when I disabled it, the problem disappeared.... of course that isn't definitive since when I re-enabled it, it did not re-appear. Assuming it's a backport problem why is it trying to do a massive upgrade periodically? Edit: It's like the apt policy is being ignored every so often.

Re: Jessie system periodicaly wants to do a full BPO upgrade

#48 Post by No_windows »

I've edited the title to reflect better what I think is happening... still have no idea why.

Yes, Yes, I know I have backports open, but that doesn't explain why it wants to upgrade everything periodically. If simply having it open meant that everything got upgraded, then it would do that every single time I ran Synaptic, but that's not the case. This happens every few months, and then disappears in a day or two, without allowing the huge upgrade.

^ This is incorrect. The backports repository should be enabled to allow updates.

In a stock Debian system backports have a pin value of 100 — this means that any explicitly installed packages will be kept updated but an `apt upgrade` will still pull everything else from stable.

The OP's preferences must have been altered since we last saw the output of

Code: Select all

apt policy
@OP: please post the output of that command again, it should show the backports repository to have a pin value of 100

We should probably also see

Code: Select all

grep -v '^#\|^$' /etc/apt/preferences{,.d/*}
deadbang

Does 'dist-upgrade' still pull everything else from stable? Normally, I use Synaptic, but I have used apt from time to time... Although, never when I've had this grab everything from backports issue.

Bare in mind, the problem seems to have gone away at this point, but here is the requested info. I will check for this info again if/when this happens again, when the problem is still active.
