Hi!I have installed Debian 9.4 Stretch 64 bit on my machine.
I have noticed that that my gnome shell freezes periodically especially when watching videos from VLC.The videos continue running but I cannot minimize the screen and I am forced to press Ctrl-Alt-Delete that kills the VLC session then my screen becomes active.
I checked the system logs from var/log/messages and found the messages below at the time of the freeze
Jul 19 21:11:57 debian gnome-session[1214]: gnome-session-binary[1214]: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Which video hardware and drivers are you using?
https://wiki.debian.org/HowToIdentifyADevice/PCI
If you are running proprietary drivers then try switching to the free versions instead.

Try installing xserver-xorg-video-intel, you may be experiencing a bug in the generic modesetting driver.

The package xserver-xorg-video-intel was already installed before the freezes.Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Try installing xserver-xorg-video-intel, you may be experiencing a bug in the generic modesetting driver.

Really? I thought stretch was supposed to default to the modesetting DDX driver
Anyway, I missed the rather obvious Skylake references, you need firmware-misc-nonfree, at least.
