Nvidia driver not loading after instalation

Postby jpantao » 2018-12-29 20:15

Hello.

I just installed debian 9 stretch and I have been trying to get my nvidia GeForce GTX 950M to work following the debian wiki, installing the respective kernel headers and the nvidia driver recommended by nvidia-detect, also added 32-bit architecture with dpkg - -add-architecture i386 and installed the following packages: libavcodec-extra firmware-linux-nonfree.

After installing the driver and rebooting the system, when a try to open nvidia-settings I get the message:
"You do not appear to be using de NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server."

In the debian wiki says that debian 9 does not need nvidia xconfig and I tryed to run nvidia-xconfig after installing the package and when I reboot the system I get a blinking cursor and nothing more.

I can't seem to find the answer on the internet. Can you help me?

Thank you.

It would help if you explained what hardware you have. I suspect you have an Optimus dual graphics laptop for which the nvidia-driver package is not the correct way to get it working. Search the forums and internet for "Bumblebee".

In addition to what sunrat asked, what did nvidia-detect tell you to install? It has been telling people to install legacy drivers for modern cards.

p.s. stay away from nvidia-xconfig, its a piece of garbage.

Sorry, my laptop is an hp envy-notebook with the graphics car I mentioned I don't know if it is an Optimus dual graphics laptop but wouldn't the nvidia-detect tell me that?
Thank you for your time.

It told me to install nvidia-driver.
I won't try nvidia-xconfig again for sure.

So I just install bublebee and I'm good to go?
I've installed it and the "optirun glxgears" seems to be working just fine.
I still cant use nvidia-settigs.

Thank you for your help!
