Recreate disk arrangement after failure ?

Postby Jethro_UK » 2019-07-29 12:12

I have a machine that had a RAID1 directory setup as md0

Of course both drives failed within an hour of each other an are unrecoverable.

Is it possible to retrieve the actual size and partitioning of the md0 array from somewhere else in the system ?

I am hoping to replace a drive and recreate the old structure.

E.g. gpart & testdisk can detect partitions even after some types of failure...

... but not after "the click of death". Maybe you could get better advice if you let us know your goal. What are you trying to achieve?

I'm curious what "the click of death" is I have never done anything with raid before.

Thanks for reply

my aim was to ensure the directory structure of the new disk was a replica of the old. Which I have achieved.

Both HDDs failed catastrophically - some sort of head failure as they both clicked when powered up, and refused to do anything else (looking in dmesg showed a string of read failures) and testdisk refused to see any partitions

Since I had a data backup, it was only a passing query.

One thing I will note is over 10 years of using USB HDDs, of all makes, the only failures I have had are Seagate. 4 disks failed in fact.
