Buster to fight Covid-19, folding at home, python2

Postby JeSuisFlaneur » 2020-03-28 15:41

There is, similar to SETI.org, a distributed computing software app, running the the background, that fold proteins. It's website: FoldingatHome.org has Debian based (and Redhat as well, along with Microsoft and Apple) packages that do math computations on Covid-19, cancer, and other diseases.

I downloaded the 3 packages:
Debian / Mint / Ubuntu
fahclient_7.5.1_amd64.deb
fahcontrol_7.5.1-1_all.deb
fahviewer_7.5.1_amd64.deb

and using sudo dpkg -i
ran each one.
Long story short: they don't run as their is some call for python2 (Yes, the F@H forum knows it's about to be depcrated, but they are too busy with setting up new servers, as their hive of computer quadrupled in March 2020.)

I tried: sudo apt --fix-broken install and it removed the fahcontrol client, so back to square one.

After reading at GitHub's Folding@Home pages, here: https://github.com/FoldingAtHome/fah-issues/issues/1327 and here: https://github.com/FoldingAtHome/fah-is ... -348162000 (this 2nd one also discussed this forum), I still cannot get my Buster to run this.

The terminal output can be seen as a paste, here:

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/tszymcjdWK/

Please help me.

I can get the client & viewer installed once the fix in your link is applied.

Navigate to http://localhost:7396/ to use the local web interface instead of the control package (which is uninstallable thanks to old dependencies).

I saw this in an email from Micro Center today. Any concerns about security?

I have not heard of any, maybe try Security issues with folding@home
Since you obviously are to lazy to do a search, and probably will also not bother to look at any of the results, I will share a couple of them, :
first::https://foldingathome.org/faqs/miscellaneous/what-about-security-issues/
This ensures, using the best software security measures developed to date (digital signatures and PKI in version 3.0), that we are keeping the tightest possible security. ---snip--We do not support Folding@home software obtained elsewhere and prohibit others to distribute the software.

How ever they do maintain strict security measures,
Second, :https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/redline-info-stealing-malware-spread-by-folding-home-phishing/
I seriously suggest reading the info in the above link, in a nut shell, DO NOT use any version of the app offered in any e-mails!
Also, they do have a forum where you can ask questions about any concerns about this software, that would be the best place to ask about this software,..https://foldingforum.org/index.php
I'm sure this must of been asked before but an update isn't a problem I'm sure. Thanks ... Folding@home FAQ: What about Security issues?

You are certainly not the first person to ask about security issues....

no, not too lazy. taking a break from working(critical infrastructure), one of the fortunate that hasn't been affected by much that has shut down. reading email from my phone and this was one of the few hits that I had while actually searching. thanks for assuming.

I did see several faq responses from the entity that is hosting, one of which you included, but was looking for third party addressing the issue not the host.
