Re: Issue with startx debian 9

Postby pylkko » 2020-05-06 10:37

As far as I know, you cannot really expect startx to display a desktop over x-forwarding, if that is what you are trying to do. X forwarding will allow you to make an ssh connection to the remote machine and then launch a GUI software, but this is without desktop. There are some kinds of hacks or workarounds that allow you to push the entire desktop into one app and forward that, but I hope that sounds like bad idea to you without further explanation.

The x server has a built in remote desktop protocol called xdmcp, but the guide says:

"You need to bare this in mind that both X and XDMCP is inherently insecure, and that's why many of the distributions shipped as it's XDMCP default turned off. If you must use XDMCP, be sure to use it only in a trusted networks, such as corporate network within a firewall."

You can run run virtual desktops over multiple protocols designed for it, for example the Debian handbook suggests VNC:
https://debian-handbook.info/browse/sta ... login.html

But I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do. Do you mean that you are on a Windows machine, and it is hosting a Debian guest? If so, why do you want to connect to it over ssh? OR do you mean like a VPS out there on the net or something?
