[Solved] dual boot, black screen after choosing Debian

Postby chadrick » 2020-05-09 00:40

Hi All,

I had a working install of Debian that I have been using for months. Today, I installed Ubuntu alongside it in a dual boot setup. Now, when I boot the computer, it gives me the option to boot to Ubuntu or Debian. If I choose Ubuntu, it boots to Ubuntu just fine. If I choose Debian, it boots to a blank screen. What gives? :?:

Re: dual boot, black screen after choosing Debian

Please post the full content of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in your Ubuntu system. Be sure to use code tags because it will be quite long.

Why did you let the Ubuntu installer change the bootloader? It would probably have been better to leave the bootloader alone and just update it from Debian after installing Ubuntu.

I did not realize that Ubuntu would mess up grub or that it would be better to use Debian to update it.

Hmm, nothing stands out but I may have missed something.

You could try this in /boot/grub/custom.cfg in your Ubuntu system:
Code: Select all
menuentry 'Debian GRUB' {
   search --fs-uuid --set=root fa3dba76-b867-4eb5-bccb-052303a54cf9
   configfile /boot/grub/grub.cfg
}

Alternatively, boot a Debian ISO image and use the rescue mode to gain a root shell in the installed Debian system then re-install GRUB from there:
Code: Select all
# dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

^ That presumes you have a non-UEFI system, for a UEFI system reconfigure the grub-efi-amd64 package instead.

I tried all three recommendations without success. I also tried the boot-repair program without success.

I wonder if it has anything to do with my Nvidia gpu.

Ahh. The drive was running out of space. I deleted Ubuntu and updated Grub. Now Debian runs fine and Ubuntu can wait.
