No Ethernet. Maybe a driver problem

Postby bentHnau » 2020-06-10 23:14

My 10-year-old Dell XPS 17 laptop has Debian Buster installed. I hadn't been using it for the last 10 months or so, but when I started it up yesterday, neither "ip link show" nor "ifconfig -a" display my Ethernet card (which has worked fine ever since I got the laptop). The wifi card displays and is working fine. The distro on the other partition (Hyperbola) detects the Ethernet card and the card works.

I have firmware-realtek and r8168-dkms installed and updated. I did an apt-get upgrade yesterday.
Code: Select all
dmesg | grep ethernet
has no output; that's why I suspect that the driver is not being loaded.

I have the standard /etc/network/interfaces file (it comes with the new Debian installation I think), and it doesn't seem to have an effect (except that I cannot manually start networking.service unless all the eth0 entries in the file are commented out). The Debian documentation says that this file should no longer be used to configure the network, so I'm not focusing on it, but I can type up its contents if necessary.

You can use

Code: Select all
lspci | egrep -i eth

to see if your wired card is detected.

Then add

Code: Select all
    auto {your-interface-name}
    allow-hotplug eth0
    iface {your-interface-name} inet dhcp

if you are using dhcp to your /etc/network/interfaces. I do not suppose this file is deprecated in Buster. Debian wiki https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration#Setting_up_an_Ethernet_Interface outlines its usage.

edit
generalized interface name in the example

That won't work unless the OP has disabled the predictable naming system for the interfaces.

No it doesn't, /etc/network/interfaces works just fine.

Please post the output of
Code: Select all
ip link
lspci -knn | grep -A3 Ethernet
# dmesg

And perhaps try removing the r8168-dkms package, it may not be needed for your card any more.

It is detected.

Then add

Code: Select all
    auto {your-interface-name}
    allow-hotplug eth0
    iface {your-interface-name} inet dhcp

if you are using dhcp to your /etc/network/interfaces.

Those three lines were already in /etc/network/interfaces. The interface name there is eth0

I don't know whether I'm using dhcp and I don't know how to find out. Before my problem occurred, I was establishing an Ethernet connection with wicd...maybe that tells you something about whether I use dhcp.

I'm summarizing command outputs. Copy/paste is too much of a hassle because of lack of Ethernet access on the target computer.

Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Please post the output of
ip link

It just shows information about lo and wlan0.

lspci -knn | grep -A3 Ethernet

Shows the name of my Ethernet card, and

"Subsystem: Dell RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [1028:0571] Kernel modules: r8168"

# dmesg

I'm not sure what the # means here. The lspci command gives the same output whether I put "# dmesg" at the end or not.
And perhaps try removing the r8168-dkms package, it may not be needed for your card any more.

I tried that. It didn't seem to make a difference.

So no "kernel module is use" line then? The device will not create an ethernet interface unless a kernel module is loaded for it.

I'm not sure what the # means here.

It indicates that the command should be run as root, it will produce no output otherwise.

Are there any blacklists for the drivers?
Code: Select all
grep -R r816 /{etc,{usr/,}lib}/modprobe.d

That file is owned by the r8168-dkms package so it looks like you haven't removed it at all, contrary to your assertion.

Well I just tried to remove it again and Apt says it's not installed.

I'm not sure what you are seeing that is owned by r8168-dkms , but all I see in that dmesg output related to r8168-dkms is configuration files, which often don't get removed with their associated package.

Which kernel driver is loaded for the card in Hyperbola?

That depends which command you use to remove the package ;)

I thought that the file would be removed by a post-install script because to do otherwise would break the r8169 driver but it appears that is not the case so use
Code: Select all
# apt purge r8168-dkms

Or
Code: Select all
# aptitude purge ~c # will remove all unused configuration files

It looks like the r8168 driver doesn't work with buster's kernel: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=931812
