Cannot find any WiFi connection

Postby zoltydelfin123 » 2020-06-15 18:21

Hello,
I have downloaded today Debian with the latest iso, with graphic overlay lxqt. My problem is that I can't see any wireless netowrk, I can connect through Ethernet cable and have Internet, but I cannot find any WiFi and connect to it. Command lspci shows that the network controller (Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100) is found by system so I don't know what is the problem. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Hello
I think this will help: wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi.

Thank you, but I can't run modprobe after installation of firmware package iwlwifi.
After reboot I see:
Code: Select all
root@debian:~# less /proc/modules | grep iwlwifi
iwlwifi 249856 1 iwldvm, Live 0xffffffffc0bfd000
cfg80211 774144 3 iwldvm,mac80211,iwlwifi, Live 0xffffffffc0ac5000

Code: Select all
root@debian:/home/debian# apt install modprobe
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package modprobe

And my repository is:
Code: Select all
#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.4.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20200509-10:26]/ buster contrib main

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.4.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20200509-10:26]/ buster contrib main

# stretch-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib non-free

So what to do now?

/sbin/modprobe is supplied by the kmod package, judging by the working directory in your prompt I suspect you need to read viewtopic.php?f=16&t=142973

Or just reboot after installing the firmware, it will be loaded by udev during the boot process.

Maybe for a little while , but
You should also read this: https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
Repositories that can create a FrankenDebian if used with Debian Stable:

Debian testing release (currently bullseye)

Debian unstable release (also known as sid)

In your case , you have Debian stretch mixed with Debian Buster, hopefully you have not installed anything yet, If you are mixing the 2 repositories deliberately , I can not help, I am not that advanced and would not dare trying to mix the 2, If you want a stable , reliable system you need to remove the old stretch repos, and just use the Buster ones, see: https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList?action=show&redirect=sources.list For details on what your /etc/apt/sources.list should be.
=============
Also, read the url given more carefully, https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi, no where does it say to do what you are trying to do:

from :https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi
nstallation

Add a "non-free" component to the apt sources.

Update the list of available packages and install the firmware-iwlwifi package:
Code: Select all
# apt update && apt install firmware-iwlwifi

As the iwlwifi module is automatically loaded for supported devices, reinsert this module to access installed firmware:
Code: Select all
# modprobe -r iwlwifi ; modprobe iwlwifi

----- snip ------

Any way, you should read it all, and carefully,... your sources.list is bad, and you may have all sorts of problems later, so you really should fix that.
Please Read.. What we expect you have already Done.
