[solved] wifi does not work in RT-image

Postby peer » 2020-08-15 14:05

system: Debian 9 lxde minimal with networkmanager

Wifi does work on my old toshiba laptop with linux-image 4.9.0.13-686-pae.
When I change to linux-image 4.9.0.13-RT-686-pae wifi does not work anymore. Networkmanager sais that Wifi Networks is disconnected.
When I change back to linux-image 4.9.0.13-686-pae wifi works again.

It seems that Wifi is disabled in the RT image.
Is there a way to get wifi working again with the RT image????

I don't have an answer but I must complement you on keeping the older linux-image to fall back on. That little trick sure saves a lot of grief. :!:

What wifi card do you have and what did you do to get it working for the non RT kernel?
If your card required you to build a module from source, you must do it again for each kernel.

I will try to reinstall the intel firmware with the rt-image active.
edit: Reinstalling did not have any effect.

I tried an usb wifi adapter (us robotics maxg). This is an adapter that works out of the box on any linux system.
This adapter does work in the RT image. So the problem must be in the build in wifi adapter Intel Wireless Pro 2200.

I will try to remove the intel firmware completely and then reïnstall it.
edit:
I removed the firmware completely. and reïnstalled it. Now I was asked to accept the license. I did.
But the wifi still does not work.
So my conclusion is that the build in wifi adapter does not work with this RT-image. There is something missing in the kernel that is needed for the firmware to work. I will have to change and rebuild the image. This is too complicated for me.

I will mark this item because I now know where the problem lies and how is can be solved.

Have you checked the systemd journal or dmesg(8) for any clues?

No, I did not check systemd journal and dmesg(8) for errors.

I am curious about the need for a real-time kernel on that old, 32-bit system, though...are you going to do some audio creative work?

I have an old fujitsu laptop that I solely use for my electric guitar. I use a focusrite interface.
I created a minimal debian os with an RT image. Although it is an old laptop it works great (no xruns with a latency of 8ms.).
But the screen starts to blink when the laptop is starting up. When it runs everything is ok but I wonder how long this laptop will continu to work.
Therefore I wanted to try if another old laptop could replace the fujitsu. So I tried the Toshiba. But this laptop does not work very good for my purpose. At first there was the problem with the wifi. After that I created a dualboot on this laptop. I created a minimal debian os with RT image similar to the Fujitsu. But even with a latency of 16ms there were plenty of xruns and the laptop freezes a lot. So the Toshiba will not be used as guitar amplifier/effect.
