Scanner utility (how to install ? ) - (.deb missing)

Postby AngeloU » 2021-01-26 15:25

I have downloaded Epson utility :

imagescan_3.59.2-1epson4debian10.debian.tar.xz

extracted to:
debian/
..
debian/control
....
debian/imagescan.conf
...
debian/imagescan.install
....

Official instructions on : https://wiki.debian.org/Scanner#nonfree
Quote:
" ... Change to that directory and execute the script with
sh install.sh''

Shall I write a new .sh file ?
Using ..write manager (Nano or..) ?

Thanks everybody.

I went to

http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX

and searched for XP-8500. I do not get anything returned! Other model
names do work.

What is in the uncompressed imagescan_3.59.2-1epson4debian10.debian.tar.xz?

Ok, I located this file on an Epson web site. It is a file for building a
Debian package. Surely Epson do not intend users to do this?

You are using buster? If so, there is much easier way of getting
scanning to work than this,

AngeloU, I'll be clear - the file you have is useless to you; you
have not downloaded a Epson utility. Utiliities are distributed at

http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX

Except, I get a blank page going there.

Thanks for your answers.

I forgot to explain that you have to write ( on Epson download page :
http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/searc ... ch/?OSC=LX ) :

XP-850 ( even though right number of my printer/scanner is XP-8500).

This is the only way to open download page (Epson utility) , where is also listed XP-8500 )

2. I am running Debian Buster

Oh! How unusual.

A .tar.gz (not a .tar.xz) can be downloaded. Now follow the wiki advice.

A modern, futureproof SANE backend, sane-airscan, is available in buster backports.
Your device is supported by it. See the wiki for how to alter /etc/apt/sources.list and install
it.

First way :

tar zvxf imagescan_3.59.2.orig.tar.gz (Scanner Debian wiki)

received a long string of lines:

utsushi-0.59.2/upstream/boost/boost/mpl/aux_/preprocessed/bcc551/greater_equal.hpp
utsushi-0.59.2/upstream/boost/boost/mpl/aux_/preprocessed/bcc551/minus.hpp
...
utsushi-0.59.2/drivers/
utsushi-0.59.2/drivers/Makefile.am
utsushi-0.59.2/drivers/combo.cpp
utsushi-0.59.2/drivers/Makefile.in
.........
At the end I tried :

sh install.sh (Scanner debian wiki)

angelo@debian-10:~/Scaricati$ sh imagescan.sh
sh: 0: Can't open imagescan.sh

I would recommend the second way with sane-airscan.

This is not the file I am offered. I have
imagescan-bundle-debian-10-3.65.0.x64.deb.tar.gz

Brian, following your accurate instructions now I have a full working scanner.

(Similar way to install Printer utility, with attention to the ''wrong'' number XP-850).

Many thanks
