help me remove buster-backports 5.x kernel

Postby carmima » 2021-01-30 01:27

Hello
I tried to install a new linux 5.x kernel via backports
unfortunately, I failed to rebuild the nvidia driver module
I have an old GeForce GT 640 OEM so I need the 418.152 driver.
rebuilding the nvidia module I get a warning not to use the buster-backports nvidia-driver with my old GPU.
so I cancelled to build nvidia module
now I would like to remove the default grub entry list, because the new 5.x kernel start in 640 x 480 video mode and I do not like it.
I have to choose advanced boot option to boot 4.19 linux kernel
how do you edit grub menu list ?
thank you

Why don't you just remove the linux-image-5.x package ?

Manual editing of /boot/grub/grub.cfg is not recommended because changes will be overwritten by update-grub anytime a kernel package (and some other packages) is installed, updated or removed. Instead you can edit /etc/default/grub and change the value of GRUB_DEFAULT. If the new default entry is in a submenu, the syntax is
Code: Select all
GRUB_DEFAULT="1>2"

for example if the default entry is entry 2 in submenu entry 1. Entry numbers start at 0.
Then run update-grub to update the boot menu.

Aren't there some Tesla-418 Nvidia drivers in backports that should support your card? I know I backported them for MX Linux from upstream...here, try these in backports:
