Console (text) only install

I currently use ubuntu server iso to install a basic console interface (host) with a few x-window packages and from there I install my virtual (guest) systems (kvm). I would like to try the same with debian however I cannot seem to hit on the necessary (basic) package(s). Could someone point me to it? Thanks
