e1000e Intel I219-LM resetting over and over again

#1 Post by AveryFreeman »

Hi,

I am running Debian Bullseye on a Dell Precision 7730 laptop. It has a consumer-style e1000e NIC, specifically the I219-LM. I've run Ubuntu on this computer, too, and I noticed this problem I'm having on their platform, as well.

Basically, when I start up the computer, as soon as I log in, the NIC disconnects and re-connects over and over again, making it completely unusable. I generally have to turn off the phys NIC connection and rely on WIFI, which to me seems like an unacceptable solution.

I've tried turning off altnames and setting autoneg off, the autoneg off + full duplex appears to increase the intervals between disconnect/reconnections, but it continues happening. I generally compile my own kernels, but I have been using the stock Debian kernel lately in order to make my system more compatible with the release so hopefully if I file a bug report it can be more useful. I'm also trying to see what I can do on my end to lessen the problem, because I don't just want to file a bug report arbitrarily, but it's looking like it's likely to go in that direction.

Here's an illustration of the issue:

I finally had to turn it off and go back to wifi. Apparently setting autoneg = off is only helping for a short period of time.

If anyone has a good idea about how to tackle this issue, I'd love to know. Thanks!

Perhaps try https://github.com/koljah-de/e1000e-dkms-debian

But you should probably install the header metapackage rather than the specific version recommended in README.md:

Code: Select all

# apt install linux-headers-amd64 dkms build-essential
deadbang

Unfortunately, rather than figuring out the problem, I converted the laptop to Ubuntu 21.04 by changing sources.list and re-installing all the packages. Thankfully, the NIC hasn't reset since 8:55 this morning. I would like to understand why this happens, though.

I actually used that dkms package on an earlier version of Ubuntu (I want to say 19.10) when I was experiencing the same issue, albeit, not as frequently. Still had issues. The i219-V and i219-LM are incredibly common, I'm surprised the issue hasn't been figured out yet.

I'm not confident it won't start up here again soon.
