upgrade crashed and burned -- help!

#1 Post by deepstar »

Hi All,

I tried to upgrade but it appears that significant numbers of things have gone missing. Things like guarddog (my firewall), synaptic, kmail, knode, etc.

When I try to add back a missing app - say guraddog - apt-get complains:

root@doren:/home/user6# apt-get install guarddog
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you
have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the
unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet
been created or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely
that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed. The following information may help
to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
guarddog: Depends: kdelibs4c2 (>= 4:3.4.2-1) but it is not going
to be installed E: Broken packages

Does this mean that kdelibs4c2 in the archives is broken? Would this file in another archive be ok? If I try to apt-get install kdelibs4c2, it complains about 3 or 4 other missing dependencies. How do I go about locating and installing the missing apps?

Between the software that are missing or any other software, is there anything that you installed in the previous version of your system that were not part of the official list of software?

Basically, I didn't check to see what would be removed when I went to upgrade. Pure carelessness on my part -- especially as synaptic lists all conquences (add, upgrade, remove) before asking approval to continue. Major lesson here.

The archives were in the process of a major upgrade for Sid. Others who knew what was going on said to be patient for a few days. So....waited a few days and the upgrade went thru ok.

Another suggestion, since you seem to enjoy using Synaptic like me, check the status button in the bottom of left side part and look for the list that shows 'obsolete'. You will find all packages that were not in the official list (be stable, testing or unstable).

Then, take note of them, and remove them all (including configuration files) before upgrading.

Cheers,

Domecq
