windows 98 configuration:
my network card is VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
my IP Configuration is
Host name Treasury03
DNS Servers 202.78.97.35
Node Type Broadcast

IP Address 192.168.1.243
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.15

how do i configure this settings in my debian linux box(woody),
residing on the same machine?
what settings in the /etc do i edit?

Somethink like this maybe. You better use Vim to edit each file than doing the "echo text > file" think...

Of course, you have to be root.

* Define your network settings:
echo "iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.243
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.15" >> /etc/network/interfaces
/etc/init.d/networking restart
* Then check
ifconfig eth0
ping -c1 192.168.1.243

* Define the DNS server address:
echo "nameserver 202.78.97.35" > /etc/resolv.conf
* Then check:
dig www.debian.org

* Define your hostname:
echo treasury03 > /etc/hostname
hostname -F /etc/hostname
* Then check:
hostname

* Define your local hostname IP resolution:
echo "192.168.1.243 treasury03" >> /etc/hosts
* Then check:
ping -c1 treasury03
