Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Guys I strongly suges you Songbird, yes true its primary mision is a media player, BUT, it has a fantastic Web Browser integrated, Im just trying it right now and the good thing is that, it's a product of mozilla and is very similar to firefox, apart that there is a plugin that accelerate the browsing, its really awesome!

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
I also like iceweasel but for the people that wanna use firefox
download the tar.bz2 file to your home directory. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
than in console cd to your home directory
cd /home/your.username
than
mv firefox-3.0.10.tar.bz2 /usr/lib/
cd /usr/lib/
tar -jxvf firefox-3.0.5.tar.bz2
ln -s /usr/lib/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
but anyway iceweasel is also great to use

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Seamonkey is worth a look. It's offered as an all-in-one package similar to the earlier Communicator. In fact I only use the browser component, which I prefer to Firefox/Iceweasel as it's more configurable.
Re:
what happens when you update?_FOCUS_ wrote:Well. I understand why debian doesn't use firefox anymore.
out of topic; in hotmail service my iceweasel wasn't work. so I made change like that. iceweasel/3.05 doesn't work but firefox/3.05 works.

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Would it have been better to:
- Provide epiphany OOTB since it uses gecko
- Move FF/TB/SM to a 3rd party repo like deb unofficial etc
This Ice animal thing is stupid from a support POV. Several times I was running iceweasel on googled "iceweasel .." (out of habit) only to get crap results as the world is running Firefox.

Epiphany is incompatible with Firefox plugins and's far too stripped down.shadowking wrote:- Provide epiphany OOTB since it uses gecko
That ignores the entire reason Mozilla programs were rebranded in the first place.- Move FF/TB/SM to a 3rd party repo like deb unofficial etc
Not when Mozilla says that without it Debian can't truly support them. This Ice animal thing is stupid from a support POV.

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Why do complain so much about Iceweasel? All the extensions that work with Firefox work just fine with Iceweasel.
Silly sites like hotmail work just fine.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042807 Firefox/3.0.11 (Debian-3.0.11-1)
If you really must have Firefox then download and run it.

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
I run swiftfox 3.5 beta on lenny and firefox is in the mepis 8 lenny repo, So its easy to have FIRE instead of ICE.
Nothing against ice except its confusing and if people have to manually change UA its not good.

if i move to iceweasel 3.1 it would stay as 3.05 as well?BioTube wrote:It stays the same.

Maybe try pretending your browser is made by Micro$oft?
Iceweasel has been working very nicely for me.
I haven't yet come across any sites which don't recognize it, but one possible fix would be to install a Mozilla add-on (the iceweasel menus work the same way as Firefox) called "User Agent Switcher" which allows you to pretend that your browser is some generic Micro$oft thingie. (The goal is to fly under the radar of the emarketeers, I think.) When I tried that under another distro I had some problems with sites behaving oddly, but using Iceweasel under Lenny this problem has disappeared. I am sure no sites would fail to recognize Netscape Navigator, to name just one browser you can pretend to be using.

How about iceweasel 3.5?
you have to laugh at the things that hurt you just to keep the world from running you plumb crazy
Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
How come this thread took 4 pages long
Just use Iceweasel it is great. Stop complaining about it. Just a naming issue with Mozilla. Another distros make it too. Arch rebrand it like Minefield,Bon Echo etc...

The reason is simple if you do not like it run Mozilla's Firefox or swiftfox.
Due to Mozilla logos licensing, Mozilla software isn't DFSG-free, so Debian distributes Mozilla software with different logos. One day Mozilla Corporation decided to revoke the agreement to let Debian use Mozilla trademarks, so Debian changed to non-trademarked product names. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Co ... _in_Debian for more information.
The Debian Free Software Guidelines, which are explained at http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines
The question is why this thread is unlocked when it was locked a while back.
Debian uses iceweasel period.

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Whoa 63 posts for that question. Here's some links to clear up the matter.
Here is what two browser detectors tells me I have, and I use Iceweasel on Debian/lenny
Detect my browser [1]
http://www.quirksmode.org/js/detect.html
Detect my browser [2]
http://detectmybrowser.com/
The official [and comprehensive] wiki on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Co ... an_project
The fundamental differences are that Debian wouldn't use the logo and that debian actually is patching the browser supplied with Debian [as opposed to Mozilla].
Other than that, same browser.

Installing Firefox in Debian - The No Brainer way
================================================
It's quite easy to install Firefox as a sort of a portable app in Debian.
Sort of like downloading a zipped version of Firefox in Windows and extracting it to a folder.
================================================
In KDE the steps are:
A. Visit - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html
And you should see something like:
Upgrade Your Firefox
3.5.2, English (US), Linux (9.4MB)
Download Now - Free
And it will ask you to download "firefox-3.5.2.tar.bz2"
B. Download it into your home folder.
C. Launch the file and it should load in Konqueror and show a firefox folder. Right click on the folder name and select [COPY-TO] - [HOME FOLDER] - [COPY HERE]. This will create a /firefox folder under your home account.
D. Change over to the firefox folder and select the Tree view.
E. Look for the file named "firefox" that shows the "File Type" as "Shell Script". Click it and that's all it takes.
There is one bummer however - The only problem doing it this way is this is per user account. Each and every user will have to do these same steps in their own home directory.
==========================
As far as putting a shortcut to the file on the KDE desktop the steps are:
1. Right Click on the KDE desktop and select.
A. Create New - Link to Application
B. On the [General Tab] type Firefox
C. On the [Application Tab]
A. Description: Firefox
B. Command: Either Browse to the shell script or key it is as something like '/home/username/firefox/firefox'
Note: The single quotes are required!
C. Work Path: /home/username/firefox
2. Note at this point it's icon will be the Gear. To change it to a Firefox icon do these steps.
A. Click on the Icon in the [General Tab]
B. Click [Other Icons] and [Browse]
C. Click in the [Icons] Folder and select your favorite.
Personally I selected 'mozicon128.png" because I like my icons huge.
3. Save it and you are good to go.
