I read a lot of these post this is some real funny stuff I laughed so hard I started crying. I like Debian and if the powers that be want Firefox to be Iceweasel in Debian that is good enough for me besides I like the name! :D

Firefox 3.0 coming to end of life

#92 Post by dotlj »

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Platform/2010-03-16
there will be no more updates for Firefox 3.0.x
the 3.5.10 and 3.6.3 branch update schedules will be posted next week
will contain lots of small regression and security fixes
security fixes
hopefully out of process plugins for 3.6.3 too!
With both Lenny and Squeeze using Iceweasel 3.0.x will this facilitate an upgrade to 3.5.x which is in backports?

Sorry if this is the wrong place, please move to correct place.

Squeeze has 3.5.8-1 at the moment.

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache policy iceweasel
iceweasel:
  Installed: 3.5.8-1
  Candidate: 3.5.8-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.5.8-1 0
        990 http://ftp.fi.debian.org squeeze/main Packages
        300 http://ftp.fi.debian.org sid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Q: Why is the Eunux kernel so bloated?
A: It was made in the image of its founder.

That post is pretty vague: "there are still issues with it". Like what? They couldn't decide on an icon?

heh, I quite prefer the icon for iceweasel myself, and "iceweasel" sound no more odd than "Firefox".

glandium.org » Blog Archive » Security update for Iceweasel 3.6 preview
While the package is not ready yet for experimental, mostly because there are pending changes in the 3.5 branch, Mozilla released a security update today. So, here are the packages you need to be safe security-wise with Iceweasel 3.6. Please note only xulrunner packages have been updated, as the security fix lies in the xulrunner code.
. . .
A known regression of this version is that the icons in the search box on the top right don’t show up.

Who care? iceweasel is more stable and with less security holes so who care what version it is? I can view youtube, google and forums.debian.net just fine, what more would I need from a browser? 3.7.4.5.3.4SE?

Why would I care to build firefox packages? icewasel upgrade itself with apt-get upgrade.

Ice weasel and firefox, etc were put in here so that we would bite at every add-on ever made and slow our systems down soooo slow that they have time to go out drinking while we wait for the next page to load. Makes about as much sense as any other conspiracy theory out there..

Here's another post about Firefox coming back into Debian :)

It's said to be done due to to the changes in Mozilla policy.

And the most important idea about all that Iceweasel stuff (besides rebranding) is it's support for old 3.0.x version of Mozilla (which they have ceased to support).

I installed Minefield via the PPA on Launchpad.

Deal with it.

Sure installing Ubuntu packages on Debian, yeah that's definitely not the right way to go about doing things.

Because some people from FF decided to get picky and change the licence agreement along with throwing a fit over FF being maintained by others beyond their release cycle. While I can see some of their stance it is a bit of a snub to the Free software/Opensource community since they don't maintain patches for older releases of their software (ie. you need to upgrade to the next release instead). All corrections from knowledgible folks accepted. This is just my understanding of things.

Well. Mozilla is a business.
